[solved] Code not loaded, installer fails (no replies)

That's a small problem that can however cause some headache:

The installer crashes after downloading the installer code and trying to resume the installation.

The message shows something like "installer stopped unexpectedly with return code 1"

The reason and the solutions are rather silly:

When Firefox / Icewasel downloads the installer code it puts it into /root/Download/Firefox, from where it's not accessible.

The solution is as simple as telling Firefox do download to the desktop; the installer will find it automatically and the installation will work like a charm.

Note: This problem/hack may seem and is indeed trivial in the case of normal installs, but it may be a mayor PIA when you are doing an install from an USB stick into a netbook (Acer Aspire One in my case).

Using XP, I have replaced the standard explorer shell with Emerge Desktop

I've programmed my mouse so that the middle mouse button sends a particular keystroke

Emerge Desktop traps that keystroke and pops up my menu for me ... wherever I click the mouse - It makes no difference whether I click on the desktop, in a folder, in an application window, on a button or other menu ... I always have access to my menu

Is it possible to do the same thing under eLive, so that I get the same menu I get when I left-click on the desktop?

Cheers

EDIT

OK ... I can do it under 1.9.16_unstable, but not GEM/1.0

So, I guess I'll have to wait for the next stable release

Automatix2 on Elive (4 replies)

Hi folks,

For those of you wishing to install things like Google Earth, Picasa, Real Player and lots more, just do as follows :

The simplest way seemed doing as on an Ubuntu by installing the Automatix 2 scripts.
- At first, make sure you have non-free & contrib repositories in your /etc/apt/sources.list, like this :

deb [ftp.fr.debian.org] etch main non-free contrib

(you may adapt to your location, not everybody has the luck to live in France ;-) ).

- Update your package database, if you have to :
# apt-get update

Then proceed as follows for installing automatix2 :

# echo "deb [www.getautomatix.com] etch main" | tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

# wget [www.getautomatix.com]

# gpg --import automatix2.key

# gpg --export --armor E23C5FC3 | sudo apt-key add -

... Update your packages database again :
# apt-get update

... and finally install automatix :
# apt-get install automatix2

... This is not quite over ! You need to modify a file that makes automatix check the distro version at startup. Go to /usr/lib/automatix2/, and ;

# cd /usr/lib/automatix2/
# cp distro_helpers.py distro_helpers.py-original
vim distro_helpers.py

... and once there, locate the string :
versions = (('6.06','6.06'),('6.10','6.10'),('7.04','7.04'),('4.0r0','4.0r0'))
... and replace it to :
versions = (('6.06','6.06'),('6.10','6.10'),('7.04','7.04'),('4.0','4.0r0'))

...That's it. Save and run automatix as root :
# automatix2

... and choose in the list the programs you wish to install in the list.

I tried this succesfully on two different setups of Elive on a Dell Laptop and a Arsrock-based PC. I hope this will help.

Yours,

improve performances for desktops (no replies)

Hello
there are still some minor tweaks that can be done to improve performance of elive on desktops, don't expect too much since the system is pumped alot already, but is still possible to decrease lag time during charging applications.

There are a few tricks that can be done:

1) profiling the boot sequence
This is very easy to do, at the bootup add at the end of the boot command (you see it in the bar at the end during the graphical grub) the word

profile

then it will take slightly longer to boot since everything will be checked and arranged in order to have a faster bootup.
This must be done only once, but can be issued again in case of heavy updates.

2) prelinking executables
This is another easy way to improve slightly the performance of the system.
To do this you should install prelinking, via

apt-get install prelink

then you should edit /etc/default/prelink
changing

PRELINKING=unknown to PRELINKING=yes
and this too PRELINKING_OPTS=-avmfR

After this you should issue this command:

/etc/cron.daily/prelink
and wait till its done.
you don't need to invoke anymore since from them will be automatic.

3)If you have alot of RAM you can consider also preload or readahead.
I use more preload than readahead but both work similarly.
just an
apt-get install preload
would do the trick.

4) last thing you need is sysv-rc-conf, a daemon commander.
It is very simple to install it:

apt-get install sysv-rc-conf

then is possible to invoke it by

sysv-rc-conf

From there you can disable all the unneeded services, for example if you have a modern system u can disable apm and apmd, and other stuff that u might not need.
Be careful not to disable necessary services!

That's all.
from then you system would work at the maximum it can. Be careful not to use the point 3 on very old system or when you have little ram.

Moreover, in order to improve the life of HDD on servers and other workstations that are on 24/24 you can add this command to your rc.local (/etc/rc.local)

hdparm -B 255 /dev/(hda or sda) depending how your disk are called

This will disable spinoff of drives, and they will live far longer!

That's all

A Howto and a few requests below. If someone has a better way to do this, please reply.

To change the size of an Eterm, do this:
1. Right-click on the Eterm window bar. A Window Options menu should appear.
2. In the last item, called Miscellaneous, click on the sub-item called Toggle Fixed size.

Future Eterms you open will be adjustable by grabbing the left, right, and bottom edges of the window.

Requests:
* Windows should have adjustable sizes by default.
* Toggle items should have some indication of which way they are currently toggled, and should give some feedback that they have been toggled. (currently you just have to assume that the setting has changed.)
* Please apply the change to the current window in addition to future windows.
