Hi all,

just installed Elive, and it's looking good!

But for some reason I can't adjust my screen resolution, it gives me the message

"Your X Display Server is missing support for the XRandR extension. You cannot change the screen resolutions without the support of this extension. It could be that at the time the ecore was buildt, there was no XRandR support detected."

-What do I do to solve this? -I'm pretty much a linux newbie, and googling didn't give me anything to go by.

Thanks,
With the Installer I have gone as far as formatting my hard drive to Linux Swap (40gb D drive, other drive is 60 GB (Windows XP).
Bailed out of the install at this stage as I was not sure if by installing Elive on (D) with Windows on (C) that I would still be able to boot windows XP at start up.
Have I formatted the (D) correctly -and will I still be able to dual boot XP.
Well, I found Elive, tried the live CD (in my case USB), and I really really like it. Last night I made the donation and installed V2.
Anyway, I am a little confused because I cannot seem to get the compiz-like effects as shown in the promo video on this web site. I am not sure if I am missing a setting or if I need to install additional software?!?
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Compiz runs flawlessly on other distros.

It's been a long week and a half!!!

Hey Hello!

A week and a half ago (seems like an eternity) I left my PCLinuxOS KDE 3.5 which has been my home for the last 6+ years because they went all KDE 4 on me. Just something about KDE4 that really bugs me. Well, and, I couldn't install Kdenlive either. While searching for a new distro I learned of e17 and of course elive among others. First I tried elive by downloading it then learned I couldn't install it so I went all Zeitgeist! Of course I found I couldn't install Kdenlive there either easily so I quickly jumped to GOS, OpenGeu, Ubuntu with e17, Mint 9 lxde with e17, MoonOS and even PCLinuxOSE17... well, you know how it goes- if it's not one thing it's another! I had MoonOS all setup and watching videos online froze my pc. The same thing happened with PCLinux and then Ubuntu and Mint... argghh! I wanted Kdenlive dammit!

Last night I bit the bullet and made the donation and installed elive. Getting Kdenlive installed went very well but took a long long time. First I updated the system. Then added the ftp.de.debian.org/debian main sid (deb and src) to synaptic repositories. That reloaded fine and even showed Kdenlive 7.7.1. However upon trying to install it it wanted to remove e17. So I didn't use synaptic. I used 'aptitude safe-upgrade' in the terminal- hoping I wouldn't break the system. And it upgraded and I didn't lose the system! Then I went back to synaptic and tried Kdenlive again but had errors about ffmpeg and others that 'were not going to be installed. I added the 'debian-multimedia.org sid main' and 'debian-multimedia.org testing main' and went straight to the terminal- aptitude install kdenlive- I think. For a week and a half I've been trying one thing after another so don't quote me. Anyway- it went in! At one point during the initial 'safe-upgrade' I got the desktop failure window but the console was still working in the background so I waited until all was finished.

I'm not sure it's stable. I don't much care at the moment. I'm a long time Linux user and am not so happy about all this 'no root gui login paranoia' stuff. Having a root login has taught me so much. It really urks me when someone says I shouldn't log in as root. But that's another story :0

Gonna go play now- ehh I haven't tried watching video online yet- I'll let you know (fingers crossed).

Best wishes,
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545. I was dual booting with Vista/Mint 8 when a grub2 conflict nearly ate my BIOS. I was able to recover Vista by installing grub from Puppy, but Puppy doesn't see my wireless. I like the looks of this distro, but before I install it, wanted to know if it will run into conflict.
Dear all,
thank you for the wonderful Elive 2 stable. I tried it on my laptop and everything seems to be working fine except one little detail that has a hard time to work in several development versions. This is the CPU frequency scaling module of Elive. My CPU is an Intel Centrino 2 Duo and can go from 800MHz 1600MHz 2100 MHz 2800MHz. However the emodule can only switch from 2.1GHz to 2.8GHz. Although I am trying to set it to 800MHz it is impossible. In Debian, everything is fine.

Any ideas how can I fix this?

Apart from that does anybody know how to instruct Elive, or E17 to scan the disk for new applications that were installed after the installation of Elive? One such is nvidia-settings which doesn't appear in the menu after I have installed it nor does it appear on the Add Application when I try to add new applications to the iBar.

Greetings,

I really liked the way that elive 2.0 could use my wireless internet key out of the box and managed to mount my windows drive, usb keys, cds etc with no hassles. Not to mention everything just working out of the box! So I bought it. And promptly broke it.

The only thing that went wrong with my install was that elive grub did not manage to create a working link to my windows xp install. After much messing around which involved re-installing xp and making manual adjustments to the grub config so that it actually knew my xp install was on hd0,2 I am now happily back to dual booting.

Somewhere along the line though, elive has lost the ability to automount my windows drive at startup.

Also, trying to re-establish it manually as I would in most other releases:

mount -t NTFS -o nls=utf8, umask=0222 /dev/sda3 /mnt/Windows

gives me this:
mount: unkown filesystem type 'NTFS'

I would dearly love to avoid re-installing elive just so it can see my windows drive again.
Any help greatly appreciated. I have tried thunar advanced settings + file--> hal tab in config with no joy.

Hi, I just installed Elive, and in general, I'm impressed. But neither Iceweasel nor the package manager have internet access. The network configuration panel says that eth0 is active, but it's not acquiring an IP address via DHCP from my router. I have both an Intellinet PCI NIC card, and the onboard ethernet port, if that means anything; but neither give access, other than what is shown above. The internet connection worked when I was running Vector Linux on this same machine, and I have other machines happily connecting through this same hub and router. Is there something else I'm missing? Is there a program on Elive that will give configuration info?

Thanks in advance.

- Michael B. in Cincinnati

As a follow-up, I've tried ifconfig and dhclient to no avail; no connection. I've also tried setting up a static IP address in both my router and through the Elive configuration client (computer icon). It will NOT connect, and the distribution is useless without internet access; I can't update the system, nor add software. It's a shame, because this is a nice system. But I've read lots of entries in the forum and on the bug list about this same problem.

Has the problem with Realtec chip sets been resolved? My NIC card has this chip set.

Thanks for any responses in advance.

Update: I finally traced this to a bad NIC card. I tested it in another machine, and it also was inop there. It was apparently DOA out of the box! I replaced it with an older unit from the other machine, and now things are running fine.

Alex, thanks for your kind help and concern!

(if I was going to "play" the disk I'd expicitly start a player, {And I don't always choose to use the same one})

If I connect a flash drive to a usb port, I don't want it automatically added. And I certainly don't want it mounted on
As well as an salvaged ide drive in a usb drive encloseure with one partition dedicated to storeing all my music files that I want access to from any "normal" user login and several archival partitions that I'd selectively mount as root when needed. I actualy have /etc/fstab entries to let me use the command line to to mount three user access items as a user (usualy with the help of midnight commander which lets me quickly select the mountpoint and type:
"mount <ctrl>+<enter><enter>" I really don't want to find them already mounted someplace else...

Hi,
I am new to Elive and am trying it out on my laptop (HP Pavillion dv2000) to see how it works. I am having a problem getting the wireless to work. I have installed ndiswrapper and the driver that works for a broadcom b4311 card. I have also installed wifi-wiz so that I can log on to my home wireless router which uses a WPA encryption.

When I start wifi-wiz, I hit the scan button and it scans the area and finds both mine and my neighbor's wireless routers. However, when I try to log into my router or any other wireless router, I get the following message in terminal:

Exception in thread Thread-l:
Traceback (most recent call last):

I am unable to log into any wireless network, it seems that the wireless card is working but it isn't interfacing with the operating system. I don't know if there is some additional configuration that I must do to get the wireless working that I don't know about. I hope the information above is a help to solve this problem. I would like to get the wireless working on this laptop but will need some help.

Thanks
