hi guys.

i just spent $10 and bought that installer module to install elive 2.0 (new kernel and stable version) on my hard drive and i hope its worth every cent if i can get everything to work! now i have it running on my 13" 2.53ghz macbook pro mid 2009 and i've got everything to work except the sound, function keys on the keyboard and the trackpad doesn't respond properly.

* under volume control it detects an HDA NVidia (Alsa mixer) card but its not working. sound is not passing through the external speakers or headphone jack. but when i plug in an external sound card (creative xmod) and reboot the mac the sound passes through it perfectly.
low priority:

* the multi-touch trackpad doesn't respond properly and sometimes when i try to move it from the middle it scrolls and doesn't left and right click.

* the function keys and keyboard backlight are not working.

i'm bit of a noob with linux although i have been experimenting with it the past few years, so please keep it relatively simple.

if theres anyone who has had the same problem as me and got it to work, please tell!!!!!!

I am sorry I haven't been back on here for so long...
I sadly had to wipe my laptop, HD died actually :( and I didn't have the time to rebuild with a linux distro, so I have been suffering with OSX :'(

but I am so fed up with it so I am downloading the latest release of Elive as we speak and I plan on installing it tonight :)

This is my first post here. I just need to know: Is Elive ready for the 5th generation of Macbooks (the unibody aliminium ones)? I have a Macbook 5.1 and I'd like to try it out with Elive.

I'd really appreciate any info on this matter. Thanks!

Working fglrx dual screen configuration, with different resolutions

Hello,

- I use a macbookpro first generation (ATI graphic card)
- I have completely delete MacOSX: Elive is the only operating system of my computer. It is booted from the EFI apple Bios (with a long delay); EFI Bios -> timeout > Grub > Elive.
- I was used to connect my mac on many external displays : a 17" lcd screen at my job, a 22" wide screen at home, and I had from time to time to make presentations with different beamers. The ability to use the DVI port is thus very important for me. Moreover, I need to be able to set the resolution of the external device independantly of my laptop screen. I want to have a "clone" mode: same image on the two screens, but with adapted resolutions.

After many attempts, I had a running config to export my display, but with the Radeon driver (following the advices here). The use of xrandr seems promising to adapt dynamically to the different plug and unplug. But it seems to me that the image quality is poorer than with the proprietary fglrx driver.

Fglrx seems only partially compatible with xrandr, but the aticonfig tool seems to allow some configurations and dynamic settings. But after many tries and many X11 config screwed up, I have not managed to export my display correctly. The best that I have is a configured "clone" mode but with the same resolution on both screen (that is in fact the "mirror" mode in aticonfig language).

So, my question is : has someone a running config for dual-head display on macbookpro first generation, using fglrx, in any desktop configuration ?

One last note: I have notice lately that the Appel EFI Bios may not enable the 3D acceleration. Can this be a source of problem ? Is it possible to replace this uncollaborative bios, as it is suggested on the debian wiki ? What is the best choice with Elive ?

Thanks for reading and sorry about my poor english :-)

Re: Kernel panic stopps booting after "fine tuning"

I had the same problem on my MacBook, after running the 'fine-tune' the boot-process stops with a kernel panic.
I only captured a few screen-outputs of the 'fine-tune' because I was working meanwhile. Anyway, I think I have seen some output about 'lilo' and some changes to the initial ramdisk.
So maybe one solution could be to execute 'lilo' again after 'fine-tune' has finished.

Because I prefer 'grub', I solved the problem this way:

Boot the elive-CD into the console and
login as root then mount your installed system. My root-partition is on sda4. Normally, the drives are already mounted under /mnt, but I had to make a little change, because my /usr-partition is on sda5:

umount /mnt/sda5
mount /dev/sda5 /mnt/sda4/usr

We need a chroot-environment, so we have to switch proc and dev:

mount -t proc none /mnt/sda4/proc
mount -o bind /dev /mnt/sda4/dev

Let's do the chroot:

chroot /mnt/sda4 /bin/bash

Now let's install grub; the stage-files are not in /boot by default, so we copy them first, then start the grub-console:

cp /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/* /boot/grub/
grub

On the grub-command line you have to define your root-device, for me it is sda4:

root (hd0,3)

Install grub. I use the refit as boot-loader on the Mac, and don't want to change that, so I installed grub to be chain-loaded by it:

setup (hd0,3)
quit

Now we have to enter the system in the boot-menu, open it with an editor:

vi /boot/grub/menu.lst

And enter something like this, depending on your kernel and initial ramdisk and your root-partition:

   default 0
   timeout 5
   title ELIVE
     root (hd0,3)
     kernel (hd0,3)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26.8-elive-686 root=/dev/sda4
     initrd (hd0,3)/boot/initrd.img-2-.6.26.8-elive-686

Save and reboot, everything should work now.

Hi there,
i tried the unstable macbookversion of elive today.
(1.9.21) in live-mode it worked very fine. but after installing it to harddisk, and starting the "fine-tuning" a kernel-panic leaded to a stop of the boot-progress very early after reboot...

Details: After installing to hd, the first boot worked pretty well. But then i started a progress wich intended to "fine-tune" my macbook-elive. I changed nothing else.
My machine: Macbook (4.1)

These were the last entrys of the showed log:

"RAMDISK: Couldn´t find valid RAM disk image starting at 0.
Replacing swsusp
TuxOnIce: Can´t translate "dev/sda5" (wich is my swap) into a device id yet
List of all partitions:
No filesystem could mount root, tried:
Lernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,4)"

I hope someone can fix this! :-)
