hi guys.

i just spent $10 and bought that installer module to install elive 2.0 (new kernel and stable version) on my hard drive and i hope its worth every cent if i can get everything to work! now i have it running on my 13" 2.53ghz macbook pro mid 2009 and i've got everything to work except the sound, function keys on the keyboard and the trackpad doesn't respond properly.

* under volume control it detects an HDA NVidia (Alsa mixer) card but its not working. sound is not passing through the external speakers or headphone jack. but when i plug in an external sound card (creative xmod) and reboot the mac the sound passes through it perfectly.
low priority:

* the multi-touch trackpad doesn't respond properly and sometimes when i try to move it from the middle it scrolls and doesn't left and right click.

* the function keys and keyboard backlight are not working.

i'm bit of a noob with linux although i have been experimenting with it the past few years, so please keep it relatively simple.

if theres anyone who has had the same problem as me and got it to work, please tell!!!!!!

Working fglrx dual screen configuration, with different resolutions (no replies)

Hello,

- I use a macbookpro first generation (ATI graphic card)
- I have completely delete MacOSX: Elive is the only operating system of my computer. It is booted from the EFI apple Bios (with a long delay); EFI Bios -> timeout > Grub > Elive.
- I was used to connect my mac on many external displays : a 17" lcd screen at my job, a 22" wide screen at home, and I had from time to time to make presentations with different beamers. The ability to use the DVI port is thus very important for me. Moreover, I need to be able to set the resolution of the external device independantly of my laptop screen. I want to have a "clone" mode: same image on the two screens, but with adapted resolutions.

After many attempts, I had a running config to export my display, but with the Radeon driver (following the advices here). The use of xrandr seems promising to adapt dynamically to the different plug and unplug. But it seems to me that the image quality is poorer than with the proprietary fglrx driver.

Fglrx seems only partially compatible with xrandr, but the aticonfig tool seems to allow some configurations and dynamic settings. But after many tries and many X11 config screwed up, I have not managed to export my display correctly. The best that I have is a configured "clone" mode but with the same resolution on both screen (that is in fact the "mirror" mode in aticonfig language).

So, my question is : has someone a running config for dual-head display on macbookpro first generation, using fglrx, in any desktop configuration ?

One last note: I have notice lately that the Appel EFI Bios may not enable the 3D acceleration. Can this be a source of problem ? Is it possible to replace this uncollaborative bios, as it is suggested on the debian wiki ? What is the best choice with Elive ?

Thanks for reading and sorry about my poor english :-)

My machine: Macbook (4.1)

These were the last entrys of the showed log:

"RAMDISK: Couldn´t find valid RAM disk image starting at 0.
Replacing swsusp
TuxOnIce: Can´t translate "dev/sda5" (wich is my swap) into a device id yet
List of all partitions:
No filesystem could mount root, tried:
Lernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,4)"

I've been trying to boot from a Live CD of the Elive Macbook development version on my Macbook pro, without success. I can load the iso file from the cd I burnt into Parallels Desktop, so I know it's not the fault of Elive itself, or that the iso file isn't corrupted or something; but when I boot into the CD I choose my language, select 'Default', and then the message appears saying 'Startup is loading - please hold on', or something like that. But then it just stays like that. No animation or anything. The CD, obviously not being used, eventually stops spinning, and if I wait a REALLY long time, the screen just goes black.

Any help? I'm using a 2.4ghz Macbook Pro like I mentioned before. Not the new ones Apple just announced very recently; the one from the previous lineup.

I'm 14 and the only other experience I've had with Linux has been tinkering around with an Ubuntu virtual machine, so I'm pretty ignorant.

I've tried redownloading a few times, and burnt the iso onto several DVDs and CDs. Still no luck.

Hello,

I have a macbook that's been running on ubuntu for a while (no macOS). I am looking for something fresh and I am very interested in elive for macbook. The livecd works pretty well. What I want to try is a clean single boot install of elive. macOS uninstalled I can't do what is said at the beginning of the installer (partitioning and configuring boot loader from macOS). I guess that is why I can't boot on anything after installing (I only have 1 or 2 lines at the prompt, something about grub that can't load if I remember well). There was no special warning or message during install (simple install with a 10 Gb "/" partition, a separate "/home" and 2 Gb of swap).. Some help someone please? thanks

Hello,

I'm new to this project, so i downloaded to live cd just at this time.

While booting the linux, it recognized, that the pc is a macbook (3.1 MB061) and inserts the applesmc module.
After doing this, alle the tty's are flodded with:
applesmc: wait time failed c != 8
and nothing else happens.

I am actually on my way setting up a debian unstable - the only anoying is, that the mouse movements are very jittery... the arrow moves as it is totaly drunken ;)
But the applesmc module works fine.

But i cannot get rid of this touchpad bug..

Is this fixed within the kernel running in elive ?

And has someone solved the problem with applesmc?

Hi all,
this is my first post. I tried elivecd: amazing! The hardware is recognized almost perfect!!

I want to install in a slice of my disc! Some time ago I installed BackTraq/WindowsXP/Mac OSX Tiger with rEFIt.

Now I have Mac OSX Leopard / WindowsXP. I used bootcamp (one slice of 5GB for the second one, all the rest for the first).

And then my questions: I have to reinstall rEFIt, don't I? Some tip to how partition my disk? Gparted? iPartition? How many space for elive? (I come from Slackware, RedHat, Debian, Ubuntu but I always give all my disc to Linux!)

I will use elive for: wardriving, games (I'm an addicted to neverball), netbeans with mobility pack to develop in J2ME.

My Windows install appears messed up (no keyboard nor touchpad control).. I think the problem was given by paralles+bootcamp. I messed up something and now I don't have the keyboard and touchpad (I have to try with usb external keyb and mouse).

Well, perhaps I can restore the Mac OSX in one big drive and then cut it in 3 pieces? (4 with swap?).

Does Elive recognize reiserfs correctly? I don't want to recompile the kernel (I'm extremely lazy), so if there are problems with reiserfs I could use ext3 (that AFAIK has a better support in MAC OSX).

I cannot get rid of WindowsXP (damn SPSS and their 16 version - worst ever made!).

Sorry for the long questions.

And uhm, I found an error (?) in kismet.conf: my airport is recognized correctly with madwifi g driver not madwifi a.

I took down ath1, destroy it and create another VAP in Monitor mode. No packets gathered, after the kismet.conf modify I can scan networks.

Just my two cents!

Thank you in advance for all the fish!

Hi there!

I just buy a new Macbook Black 2.2ghz, the new model that look just like the previous version but with completely different hardware inside!

The new Macbook now use the intel santa rosa plateform.
Basicly that mean some extra performance but also the its going to be a pain to run linux on it!

If you plan to buy a new macbook you shoud think about getting a previous-gen rebuild unless you are brave like me LOL... less expensive with a more linux friend hardware. On the long run i guess that the hardware support for the plateform is going to be better but the broadcom wifi chipset is not going to run fine anytime soon without ndiswapper..

So here is my try with the macbook elive-cd:

X11 don't want to run, the new Intel x1300 have serval issue with linux and the pre-config (gma 950?) driver don't work well with this card.

then, when you get to the terminal... the apple touchpad driver spam.

On my debian install here is what i did:

Seem like the new apple touchpad is not compatible with the old driver.. there is a kernel patch floating around that somewhat fix that (and the FN key) but then, the xorg.conf configuration don't work well.. i'm not sure what's going here but the touchpad dont work well LOL

Wifi work with ndiswrapper... find a "broadcom 4328" windows driver and load it the usual way! the bcm43xx native driver dont suport 4328 right now.. but mac are popular we may expect... on day.. maybe a driver (with injection please!!)

there is a sound detection trouble with the kernel but its supported.. sound is not important for me under linux but its easy to fix. I'm just going to wait for a corrected kernel instead. (I'm so lazy!!)

any of you around have tried to run E17 with under the native osx kernel? here macports dont want to compile... there is any tutorial and\or pre-compiled e17 for darwin?

ohh btw, thx for this AMAZING project!! the best E distro around! Merci beaucoup j'adore!

I made today my first test of elive on my macbook. I discovered this distribution quite recently. I thought it was a good idea to give you some feedback from "what works" ... and more important : "what don't works"

Actually I tried elive live CD only, so I didn't try to install anything. At the start at the grub menu I chose "belgian keyboard layout" and "noacpi"

the version of the elive I used is as folow :

Quote

elive-codename: Gem +
elive-version: 1.0-macbook
date-builded: 2007-11-30
debian-version: etch
stable-release: yes
elive-stability: good, stable release
specialmachine: macbook

So, first let be optimistic, let's see what was working very good.

- Wifi was working very well with the madwifi driver
- Audio was also perfect
- Isight was détected and looks like working half ... I mean I could see something, but it was disturbed.

Now unfortunately, let's talk about what didn't work.

1) First the screen resolution was not detected. I chose the i810 in the menu to use my intel integrated graphics but the only resolution I had was 640x480 :S (quite bad).

> solution : I just modified my xorg.conf to add the 1280x800 resolution to the screen layout 24 and after a reboot of the X11 it worked.

2) When I booted on enlightenment I had a message which was saying I was not using a Macbook ... hum ... small problem !! That is not true ... I'm using a macbook !!

3) After that I saw that the two CPU were not detected by a small

cat /proc/cpuinfo

I had only one CPU so it was quite slow

That's another bug to fix.

4) Like I said higher, I chose the belgian keyboard in the grub menu. I didn't tried to see if it was ok in the tty, but in enlightenment it was not the good mapping anymore ! I had to do a

setxkbmap be

To resolve the problem

About the Delete and the Alt-Gr key, they were also not mapped ! I had to configure it manually with xmodmap.

5) I didn't look in details about de touchpad because I was using a USB mouse, but the 2 finger and the 3 fingers clic didn't looks to be configured

6) The last point was for halting the system. When all the disks were unmounted and that the system was totaly ready to shutdown the computer it freezed. I had to halt it myself by pushing on the "power" button.

------

So that was it. I hope this can help. I don't know if you have a Macbook first generation to make your tests. If you have one, I suppose you already know all these problems.
Or maybe is it the first time that someone have so muche problems.

Actually it's not really a problem for me because I could resolve most of the problems (the big problem I couldn't fix because it's a liveCD is the problem of the CPU). But everyone is not able to do so if they are not used to use linux.

Anyway I like very much the idea of elive distribution and for sure I will use it as soon as I can have a stable version ! So go on !! I like your project ! I will try to follow the evolutions.

Sorry for my bad english ! I hope it's understandable ;)

I have downloaded (here: [isos.elive-systems.com]) elive b12. I have burn it in a dvd (i can't find a new cd :D ) and I have tryed to start it.
But: at the boot there is a problem:
isolinux starts but is say:
"Boot: could not find kernel image: linux"
and this words loop infinitly.
this problem is borned because I have burned elive in a dvd, or because I download it stopping the download some times?

I have a macbook intel based (Mactel).
How can I start elive??

Thanks very much!

If I install Elive .9 to hard drive (Elive 1.0 won't work on my MacBook Pro), it runs fine unless I run the first boot script. What is the name of this script? I want to see if I can figure out what part is breaking my system and run the others.
Thanks,
