While I can appreciate Bodhi's approach, in real life it can be a time-consuming and frustrating experience downloading the high-end apps I enjoy.
How to choose a signal level meter (1 reply)

TV signal level meter is to evaluate, test the quality of radio and television signals, commonly used in measuring instruments. This paper describes the common measurement of signal level meter.

1. Measurement indicators of field strength intensity

Main measurement indicators of field intensity are: frequency range, measurement range, measurement accuracy, sensitivity, resolution and so on.

TV Signal Level Meter’s frequency range is generally between 46 ~ 870MHz, covering VHF, FM, UHF television, including the addition of channels. Field intensity with Satellite TV signal measurements, is also covering 950 ~ 2150MHz satellite band.

In general, the field intensity level measurement error is±(1-3)dB. Field intensity that can achieve±1dB, its precision is considered to be very high. Because in the measurement procedure, the standing wave has a great impact on accuracy, and temperature and other external conditions also affect the accuracy of the measurement. Noise and other interference also have a great impact when measure small signals, so it is difficult to reach the accuracy less than 1dB.

Sensitivity is also an important indicator of field strength meter. In general, the TV with better function can received image more than in 60dBuV, and can receive television images in 50dBuV, it is difficult to receive if it is below 40dBuV, and in 30dBuV nothing can be seen. But the field intensity is different, it can generally measure 20-30dBuV weak TV signal, and display the image in 40dBuV, and be able to synchronize correctly. Therefore, the general range of field intensity level is around the 20-130dBuV

2. Digital TV measurement

The digital TV broadcast is becoming more and more popular, the cable TV of many countries have become digital, delivers to users more TV and radio programs at higher quality. Digital TV has its own standard. As for digital signal level meter, the functions and parameters are also varying from analog signal level meter, some more parameters needs to be tested.

First the signal level was replaced by digital average power, and MER (modulation error rate), BER (bit error rate) also need to be tested. Some meters can test constellations. If you want to see TV picture, the TV monitoring function is needed. As the population of digital broadcasting, almost signal level meters come with function of digital average power measurement.

3. How to choose a signal level meter?

Signal level meter have many functions that can make the test work easy, users can choose a model that really meets your requirements, and then select a cost-effective one. If you need it to calibrate your equipments, the accuracy should be within +/-1dB; if you need to view the spectrum, you can select one with spectrum analyst function. if you want it for test or maintenance work, compact and economic one is better.

If you also want to test digital satellite TV, you need a DVB-C and DVB-S, DVB-S2 combo meter, DVB-T meter is used to test digital terrestrial TV broadcasting.

Signal level meter can also be integrated to other equipments to fulfill automatic measurement and analyst, and then you will need more powerful signal level meter with RS232, GP-IB, or USB interface.

"In recent weeks and months there has been quite a bit of work towards improving the responsiveness of the Linux desktop with some very significant milestones building up recently and new patches continuing to come. This work is greatly improving the experience of the Linux desktop when the computer is withstanding a great deal of CPU load and memory strain. Fortunately, the exciting improvements are far from over. There is a new patch that has not yet been merged but has undergone a few revisions over the past several weeks and it is quite small -- just over 200 lines of code -- but it does wonders for the Linux desktop."

"...So I think this is firmly one of those "real improvement" patches. Good job. Group scheduling goes from "useful for some specific server loads" to "that's a killer feature".

"It is truly a night and day difference. ..."

We have some outstanding themes, but the media players have to come with their own skins, and somehow ruin the consistency or the overall look. These players always have to be some sort of variation on metal or chrome. Now I know a lot of us here lean towards console players. But I was thinking something along the lines of the old emodule mpdule that would provide a minimum of play/forward/back buttons that would still look like it's part of the theme. I remember using Litestep for Windows, and some skins there provide forward and playback and rewind buttons on the menu or tray, and some light scripting can be bound to those buttons. The buttons I am thinking of should look almost like the maximize/minimize/close buttons on the titlebar. I was thinking it would save me from having to open audacious (or remove it altogether) and stay with the lightweights. I wouldn't have to look for a matching theme in audacious or bmp or xmms. What do you think? Unless you're a die-hard console cowboy (what are you doing here) your opinions are welcome here.

If you are involved in the Zeitgeist movement, I encourage you... no, I beg you, to carefully examine the claims of these leaders. They are presenting facts that are not true in the least, and playing on your most beloved hopes for a better world
+ possibility to calibrate screen. I know the feature exists in repos (calibrate) and maybe it's possible to use some feature from GPE (don't know about free source ang GPU). This will open new world of touch oriented lifebooks/ netbooks/ tablets..

I just installed the new 1.9.51 on my eeepc (701) today.

I've got to say, I REALLY like this distro, but a few things caught my eye that I didn't care for.

The installer is great, beside a few oddities, it provides a really fresh way to install.

Don't take me the wrong way, I'm not making fun of anyone translating or helping out, but:
The number of spelling and grammar errors in the installer and a few other programs really detracted from the great - clean look of the system.
It also makes reading the installation options more difficult.

One explanation is that there is no English (US) on the live CD, just English (UK).

I speak/write English (US) quite well, and if there is a way for me to help fix this, let me know.
:w00t:

(If I'm "translating from (UK) to (US), do I need to sign up as a translator?)

elive 1.9.51 installer should offer to install grub NOT in mbr... (1 reply)

I just installed the 1.9.51 developement version today. I'm pleased with most of what I found. But especialy since I chose the 3rd experiance level to maximise my control over the install process, I was disapointed that I didn't find an opertunity to tell it to install grub to the install partition. "/dev/hda6 or (hd0,5)" where I had "/" mounted... And instead had to remember how to use the grub shell to do
# grub
grub> root (hd0,5)
grub> setup (hd0,5)
grub> quit
# grub
grub> root (hd0,2)
grub> setup (hd0,2)
grub> quit

In order to get MY multiboot grub menu back and boot elive via the chainload entry for (hd0,5)...

This was especialy important to me because elives grub failed to boot my kubuntu jaunty...

It is possible that I was tired enough to miss an option to install grub elsewhere, But I sure didn't see it.
I think the user should always have a choice. If it was there and I missed it, tell me I'm an idiot. If the choice really wasn't included, please do consider adding it in.

Thanks.
