After getting frustrated using Windows I decided to try out
a live boot DVD of *buntu. It was a version with Gnome 2
so different enough from Windows that I thought it was
worth a try. I was happy with it until Unity came along. I
don't like the way it works, so I decided to shop around. I
came across Elive Topaz and thought it looked good, so I
decided to give it a try. Of the 3 laptops and a desktop
running 5 distros of Linux the one running Elive is by far
my favorite for look and feel. I have been using it for the
shortest time so are still not used to it and don't have all
the software I want installed yet, but I am getting there.
I am using the Lucax3 theme and I think it looks amazing.
Thanks for all your hard work on this beautiful distro.

So I downloaded Elive 2.1.37 (Unstable) yesterday and for once, a distro actually loaded up and worked awesomely.

But I went to install it and couldn't. Going through the forums here, it seems to me that I have to pay for an installer?

I wished I was able to, but I'm not in a position to do so. I am a disabled American Veteran and I live on very tight funds and if our Government keeps going the way they are, they will be cutting even more monies off of us.

Anyways, great OS you have. Guess i will just enjoy it in Live mode. Thank you.

As most of us know who have used Elive for some time, it is a really good distro. It comes already complete with most things that your average user would need for their basic computing needs.

I love the fact that this distro has what most other distro's don't, and that is a uniqueness and simplicity about it that makes my overall computing experience more fun and personal. The interface and layout is simple and beautiful, yet also very functional. I also love that the look and feel doesn't come at the cost of speed. I have had Elive installed on boxes that had specs along the lines of 1Ghz and 256mb of Ram, and it's always been fast and reliable. If you decide to put it on a more modern machine, it is lightning fast! Sometimes it takes a while for updates to get released, but they have all been worth it. Elive Gem was truly a Gem (I've still got copies of it dating back a few years. ), and Topaz is outstanding with it's more user friendly methods of set up. ( especially with wifi, it's nice not having to fight with ndiswrapper and windows drivers anymore )

There are too many distro's out there now that are all dressed up versions of Ubu**u (tis a banned word), and they are all starting to feel bland. I am glad that Elive has stayed on it's own unique path. Please keep up the good work guys!

Hi guys, haven't been back to this forum for a long time. I have been using elive for a couple off years now and wouldn't use any other os again as elive has everything I need to use on a day to day basis.

I just thought I would come and see what is happening in the elive world.

Just going through the forum to catch up on whats been happening and to my DISCUSS there is alot of junk mail here and alot off advertising stuff that people are writing in peoples topics.

I know forums are for socializing but come on guys some off the stuff people are putting here is just crap and should be wiped off this forum.

Elive is a fantastic os and use too have a fantastic forum where if you needed help someone was here to help or guide you through the problem.

So I hope in the future we can as one clean this forum up and get Elive alive and kicking again.

thank you
It is incredibly light, but also, as is not common in other distros, is really beautiful desktop too.

I was trying it on Windows 2000 (since it said it was compatible). I was only recently able to try out Topaz, since the PC had problems reading off the burned CD. I had left the USB wifi stick in the slot by accident from a reboot and when I got to the Topaz desktop using an ISO partition, I explored around and tried out that net connector. The 'scan' output was no longer blank (unlike prior versions, this one actually scanned or at least showed the results of the scan). I keyed in the passphrase given to me and the 'Connect' button switched to 'Disconnect' meaning I was online!

And to think I was about to return that USB wifi stick to the store in disgust. It'a a Ralink 2780, and sure enough, the boot messages showed it getting loaded. I am waiting for a few more things to get fixed (VT respawn, perhaps even bootsplash) before I install Topaz on my hard drive.

Hi This is not a rant, but is intended as a compliment. Elive Topaz is very impressive, the hardware detection was amazing, since I have a quirky Toshiba Satellite laptop. Everything works, and works nicely. The graphics are great. I would have tried to put this on USB so it could be installed onto an eeepc; but I will not pay twice for the same software, even Microsoft will let you use their overpriced junk on 3 pcs. Ubuntu Netbook went on, it works well, but I would have preferred Elive. Again, this is not a rant but a backhanded compliment. Hope to see some updates.

Hi, all.

I'm a 10th grade student that recently discovered the sheer amazing-ness of eLive.
I have a eeepc 701, and until now nothing has made it run quite as well as eLive. :boogie:

So far I've been using development versions to see how well eLive works.:enlightenment:
In about two weeks time I will be displaying a website/server combo at a state-wide technology fair/competition.
I would really like to have my eeepc run the administration, and the best choice for an OS would have to be the new eLive 2.0.
Unfortunately, I am absolutely, completely broke. My last ten dollars went into buying a necessary part for my webserver.:dish:

I have read about getting licenses for eLive by writing reviews, and I would like to contribute in any way I can....:work:

OK: my question.
In the last month or two, I entered a science fair with a project that compares the attributes of Windows operating systems to Linux (Ubuntu and eLive). eLive and Ubuntu completely outran Windows in the tests.
Would I be able to submit this comparison of OSs in return for eLive 2.0?
If so, who do I give it to or where do I upload it?

Being a Gnome guy for about 3 years, I'll have a bit of a learning curve with the E17 environment but that's OK....I'm enjoying it.
Great job!! Thanks!

Well done Samuel and your team! Elive Topaz works flawless on my AAO.
Installed it via an external DVD-Drive, so no USB-key needed! ;)
Took a while though, but I guess that's because of the driverspeed of this driver...
Looks great in night-theme, couldn't find EL-Panel but that's found under e17 preferences.

Thanks again guys!

This's really nice. It's a Compaq Evo loaded to the gills, but it's had a lot of trouble with X Window lately (neither Debian's stable or testing grok the video correctly, and I can find no way to correct it there). Only Knoppix' and ELive's X work on it. "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" has no effect. Classic "Debian Gotcha". ELive's X is lovely.

Thanks for helping me fix my broken system! :-) I assumed either my vid card or monitor were dieing.

The ELive installer worked reasonably well (/etc is not one of the ptn options?!?); I figured it out. Nice system, pretty much everything works, and I'm looking forward to playing with it.

I don't agree with the installer's opinion of ext2. Servers need journaling, not user boxes. On a personal box, ext2 is the way to go. The others are too fat, and unnecessary. Why anyone would choose reiser* in this day and age, I cannot imagine.

Thanks very much. Cool system.

A few weeks ago I went to the local BestBuy store to look at the Acer Aspire Revo (Intel Atom w/ Nvidia ION chipset). I was thinking about buying one but wanted to make sure it would run eLive. I had a flash drive with me with eLive 1.9.51 installed on it. I asked the sales rep about the computer and he said, "Oh, that's just a cheap, low-powered computer that's only good for browsing the web". When he walked away I plugged my flash drive into it, rebooted and it came right up into eLive. I enabled ecomorph and played around with the settings a little.

A few minutes later the sales rep walks by and sees a half dozen videos running in wobbly, transparent windows, a mac-like dock, etc. He almost fainted... "Wow! What the heck is that?" he asked. My reply? "Oh, just a cheap computer that's not good for anything other than browsing the web...". I removed my flash drive, rebooted the computer into Windows XP, and bought one. I've got it hooked up to my 50" Samsung HD plasma in the living room with a wireless keyboard.

Here's the URL for the wallpaper I'm using:

Good afternoon everyone,

I've been using ELive Gem for about 3 months now, and I have to say it is incredible. Fast, beautiful, clean and professional. Largely due to the beauty and utility of ELive I've shown to my peers and supervisors, I am currently installing the first Linux server in a traditionally MS exclusive shop. The next step is to get a few desktops out to people, coming this spring. No promises, by any means, but at least there's talk.

I would like to ask, in addition to a donation, is there something I can do to assist Elive? It is widely known that the repositories are out of date, could that be a task to which I could apply myself? I would need a bit of assistance to get going, but I'm a quick learn.

Peace,

I've read ,seen and heard very much of you ,your work, story and passion.I know now you're the only developper of this distribution and it is your only work/job and way of living/life maybe.
But what I really don't know what you're doing usually for it in general and in particular, but I know, see and use that what you're doing, you are doing very damn good, almost perfectly,at least for me.
And I have tried, installed and used ,in the last past 1and 1/2 year, dozens of different linux, bsd, windows and mac os distros, live cd's and dvd's,dual and multiboots, various desktop environments and window managers ;almost anything;but in the end came up this Elive who succeded to hook me forever and remain my favourite and my beloved one.
I don't want to sound/be cocky, eagerly or arogant, not even to please you or your pride/vanity.
I know this distro is far to be perfect and infailible,it's full of bugs and glitches, even freezings, but no one is perfect and especially our personal skills, computers, machines and laptops/noteboobks/netbooks/macbooks are far to be perfect in reality.
With Elive you managed to combine in the most way the beauty,functionality,stability,solidity,eye-candy and catchy, stylish, always up-to-date and forever developping to the perfectionism, cool interface, very user friendly, impressionable even for Hollywood FX and a terminal fanatic geek.
What can be more perfect today than a rock solid Debian Lenny 5 stable base and the beautifull latest E17 window manager with latest ecomorph(compiz-like) more eye-candy,for the compiz lovers migrated from gnome or kde, like me otherwise.
I'm really confident for the future of Elive,E17 and ecomorph in general, even beyond of a final release of Elive 2 Gem or Elive E17 Compiz 2 Final. ;):love:
