Ok, I installed a fresh copy of Elive 2.0 on my new ( to me ) laptop. My laptop specs are as follows:
Intel core 2 Duo t2400 @ 1.8 Ghz
60GB HD
Intel945 series video card
Atheros 2413 chip-based cardbus wifi adapter

Pro:
Everything works great so far. Lightning fast. Programs load up quickly, and close quickly. Havent had any hardware issues yet.

Con:
Only gripe is that the laptop freezes up on shutdown. Haven't gotten to the bottom of it yet, but from what I've been reading some other IBM/Lenovo laptop users have been having the same issue.
I'll keep this updated as I learn new things.

1.0 (stable) boots/installs/works correctly, but wireless support is sub-par and won't detect either of my Broadcom-based PCMCIA cards.

1.9 (dev) detects the wifi card and connection to the net is a breeze, except now I can only achieve 800x600 resolution. Linux support for the old Trident-based video cards is notoriously bad, but I've yet to come across another distro that supports the appropriate video mode in an older version and somehow manages to break it in a newer one. I should note that OpenGEU has the exact same issue, I suspect it has something to do with the default xorg settings for E17 vs. E16?

Reading some of the other forum entries, it looks like the card may not support 24 bit color. I'll try re-installing 1.9 when I have time and editing the xorg.conf accordingly, and report the results back here.

Bought this netbook preinstalled with windows. (first windows license i've ever bought... sad)

Installed Elive 1.9.40-compiz from a usb-stick on it without any problems at all.

The flashy window effects actually works better than one would expect, but playing movies fullscreen is not a nice experience. Maybe the graphics card is crap or that xorg needs some tweaking.

During boot, the kernel complains about the video resolution chosen by default, that's prolly easily fixed with a line change in grub config. Haven't done it yet on my own though.

The wifi didn't work out of the box for me. I had to download Broadcom's STA drivers for this to work, and with some hazzle i got it working. Many webpages states that this is a very unstable driver, but i have yet to encounter any problems with it. (btw... there is a shiny button on the keyboard that activates the wifi card it seems... don't forget to push it. =P )

Overall I'm satisfied, but if you really need to play videos on your toy, i suggest looking for another netbook or distro.

Install method: USB Stick using Unetbootin
Version: testing

This is the last model of the Aspire One family featuring a 150 GB hard drive.

Besides an insignificant problem with the installer code (related to where Firefox stores the downloads by default) everything is running out-of-the-box, I was indeed able to use the Wifi during the installation.

The only defect is that the Wifi-led is not working, but I can live without it.

Some notes:
I decided to give Elive a try as I am an E fan and felt curious about this distro (my default choices where Kubuntu, plain vanilla Debian or Gentoo). After finding out that the kernel on the Debian install media does not support the Atheros LAN card (neither it does support the Wifi card) I tried Elive and I was quite impressed to see everything working at the first try.

Gotta say elive dressed up the old laptop rather nicely. Installation was pretty much painless. Had a little work to do to get wireless networking going. Graphics was a small problem. Elive wants me to have a 800x600 resolution but I'd much rather use 1024x768. After the install I just had to edit grub where elive passed a vga=788 and change that to vga=792

Every other file I looked at had the correct resolution (1024x768) thought it a bit unusual for the 800x600 to be forced by grub.

Other than those 2 small issues everything else seems to be working out of the box.

G'day,

I'm waiting for the arrival of this laptop, the Asus w90vp-A1, and I'm looking at switching to a linux based operating system. I've taken a glance at several different distros including Dreamlinux, OpenSuse, Linux Mint, Ubuntu and Kubuntu. I haven't been able to dig up any info involving Linux for any model of the w90vp.

I'm liking what I see with this operating system. It's both different and somewhat familiar. I haven't used Linux before but I feel comfortable with trying a different operating system and I am not a Microsoft fan. I'm curious if anybody here has heard anything about running Linux on this particular laptop, if not I'll probably try it anyway and post my results!

Upon first impression, Elive Gem seems very stable and dependable on Inspiron 1200. On other linux systems this almost outdated computer can be cumbersome and slow (especially on demanding OS's such as Ubuntu). I'm pleased at the speed of Elive with the stability and the eye candy that it has to offer. Though, it does lack in areas such as Ubuntu, where hardware is concerned. The default number of repositories are rather slow, and that can be a problem sometimes for hardware. With this laptop, there seems to be very little control over volume option. Why not take advantage of the built in volume control on there keyboard? Also, I had some trouble to get wireless up and going with this linux os. But once up, the operating system did very well controlling the wireless network. Also, with this laptop, it has always had trouble with wine, but with Elive, wine is running with no problems, and has not frozen up yet.

Over all, this Linux version works very well with this laptop

Hi, i have just installed elive 1.9.22-compiz on my eeepc.... wonderful !!!...
I two important things to say: first, i'm italian, and the system (and the software i have installed via synaptic) is in english...

SOLVED !! I have installed via USB, using the unelivebootin to prepare the USB key: simply edit /boot/grub/menu.lst in the key and change

"title Special Machine: EeePC

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26.8-elive-686 boot=eli quiet vga=785 eeepc

initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.26.8-elive-686"

adding "lang=it" after "quiet vga=785"; must be this way:

"title Special Machine: EeePC

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26.8-elive-686 boot=eli quiet vga=785 eeepc lang=it

initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.26.8-elive-686"

Be sure that "vga=785", not "vga=788"

obviously is the same for each language (french is "lang=fr", german is "lang=de" etc).
THEN install the system

Second thing: when you install, you can configure the graphic system: select colour depth to 16, not to 24: your graphic system will be faster, and you surely don't need 24-bit colour.

I don't know how to make this changes on an installed system: dpkg-reconfigure locales and dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg doesn't work well. Any idea?

Excuse me for my bad english.

Yesterday I loaded Elive and was excited to have a look at the release.

1. First I loaded the LiveCD and noticed I was having some errors with the cursor not quite hitting the mark. I moved a window to the top of my desktop and it 'scrolled' shut and I was unable to figure out for a few seconds that a double click would maximise...and this occured almost every time I moved a window upwards on my desktop...annoying to begin with. Since I have had some errors on LiveCD performance in the past I decided to take the plunge and install...

2. While running the installation I decided to try an upgrade as suggested in the setup process on an installation of Ubuntu which is not my primary OS. It attempted the upgrade but when I rebooted it told me there was compatability problems with the upgrade so I should perform a fresh install. Fine...it had preserved my previous files up to this point...however, when I performed the reinstall I resized the partition and somehow it wiped all of my previous files but preserved the empty folders from the failed install on the original partition. This was strange because my files where nested in the files that where saved? seems pretty much like a bug to me...but I'm not a developer so I'm waiting for feedback.

3. The second fresh install went smoothly but when I rebooted the Xserver seemed to fail. even after it prompted me that it had made adjustments I found many errors and bugs. Sound quit working on boot up after installation and I don't know if this is the default? The cursor problems continue to be an issue. clicking radio buttons will only work if I scroll away from the button as I click.

4. Attempting to play videos freezes my system. I have tried several players as well as installing VLC media player which is usually solid as a rock. I know skins have been buggy with VLC and am not sure if it has something to do with this issue. I will look into the multimedia output settings to verify which the system has chosen by default. When the video freezes I have to wait for several moments after clicking the close for the control to come back to the cursor. What I mean is that when the video freezes I can only effect the video with a click...everywhere else I click brings no result.

5. The eye candy is nice.

Well, I hope my comments assist you developers and users.

I will say that the most annoying thing about the experience was the lack of video performance and the cursor issues. I have had this issue with other distros (ubuntu-studio) in the past but it always seems to correct itself after the first update and reboot...these issues persist.

Booted up with Elive Gem+ (development) 20080527 version on my Dell Latitude D830 laptop with the Elive image burnt to an Asda-brand DVD-R and everything worked that I've tested.

Nice screen resolution, audio is fine, wireless (54G network) and wired networks are connected to fine. NTFS partition mounted and used in read-only and read+write mode working fine.

To connect to my 54G wireless network I simply need to select the connection mode of "Managed" before clicking Apply.

It would be nice to auto-connect to the nearest wireless network. If this was implemented then the livecd mode would be perfect and not require ANY post-boot configuring. My wireless router is using MAC-filtering so the wireless encryption is disabled.

I use Elive in livecd mode on this laptop because it is a work laptop and I'm not permitted to use it for personal use. This way I can use the laptop's hardware, avoid the OS on the HD (Windows XP Pro) and their Win32 auditing program is useless!

:D

Cheers

I have a Dell Latitude X1 and I am having some problems loading the eLive stable version onto it (which I did purchase). I'm new to linux (just starting toying w/it a little over 3-4 mo ago) and it's different. I've done the ubuntu, redhat, suse, thing but I really like the eLive interface. I've even loaded a couple versions of the Hackintosh Leopard OS on it. However when I load the Stable CD, I get an error, that seems to be related to not recognizing the CD-Rom or mini-HD. If I get it to actually load, I get into a command prompt issue that I'm not able to figure out. I never get the actual GUI interface to log in. It's always cmd line login. If I get it loaded to a prompt, I don't know how to install it from command lines. Again, I really am not familiar w/linux, so I'm looking for an easy how to, install from command line or interface that works. It uses Dell's propriatory powered USB interface. I tried an external CD Rom w/an IDE to USB interface, and had the same problem. Not sure if it's a HD problem, or a CD Rom problem. The X1 uses a mini-HD which is somewhat different than the standard laptop IDE. Either way, I can't get it to work. Some input or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I successfully installed Elive 1.0 on my laptop, and now everything works fine.

I only had a small problem: black screen when running the cd in live mode, before installing. This was due to bad xorg.conf.

How to solve this issue:

1) Open a console with ctrl+alt+f1 and log in as eliveuser, with the password elive;

2) Type dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and follow the steps. Be sure to answer yes to the question related to the automatic detection of the video card! And when choosing the resolutions, add even 1280x800 (which is the best for this laptop).

3) Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (for example typing: nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf) adding the following string at the end of the "Device" block:
Option "VBEModes" "True"

4) Switch to the graphical mode display (ctrl+alt+f9), which will obviousely be black at moment, and press ctrl+alt+backspace. If everything worked fine you'll see the login screen.

If you were wondering, Elive automatically detects everything, including the wifi adapter.

P.S.: I apologize for my english.

I have a Compaq Evo N1050v laptop running Elive GEM 1.0

No problems running it, only when I want to alter the volume I get some odd warning/error on opening ALSA, something not to worry about, because it works anyway...

The WiFi was set up with WiFi-wiz, and now runs effortlessly.

Only thing is boot-time, keeps taking too long for me, about two to three minutes, but that was the same with other distro's I tried before. But this one (being Elive) is here to stay.
;)

I just love the look and feel of it.
To me as a MAC-user, Elive is the best choice...

Not sure if this helps at all, but I had experimented with the Elive Revolution DVD that came in a Linux Pro mag(could have been Linux Format, I don't remember). Everything worked great, except for the touchpad mouse. It moved so slow that it was not usable. This may have been fixed in the newer release, but I no longer own the machine, therefore I cannot confirm this. Also, the media hotkeys were unusable(As with every other distro that saw this machine)

Hope this helps someone.

Wireless not detected by default but it works when u install the driver with ndiswrapper.
The screen seems ok, the nvidia drivers work.
The only problem i found was the sound. I have to reconfigure the ALSA every time i start elive. I have buttons to control the alsa mixer (turn it up or down, and mute) and these buttons just don't work. If i connect headphones or mics they don't work, might be a problem with the entire chip.
