hi everyone!

I got elive 1.9.61 installed on my hd and simply love it. but i have one question: on my old debian-based distro compiz worked fine, jelly windows, shades and cube. really nice and fluent. on elive everytime i try to get ecomorph running it doesn't work: when i move a window it doesn't move with mouse, simply redraw where i release the left button, when i close a window it takes too long and animation seems like a 90's gif!

i'm using nvidia 96 driver, 16bit colour depth, 1280x1024. without ecomorph everything goes fine. i don't remember what driver was using my old linux , probably the nouveau driver. is there any possibility to get ecomorph running with nvidia driver or should i try nouveau? is this driver going to be included in near future so we can avoid compiling it?

my pc is an amd athlon xp 1150mhz (don't know exact model) with 1,5 gb ram.

thanks in advance

I recall using compiz on some other distro. One would be able to swing the mouse to the top left corner or right corner and the cube would switch to the next desktop in that direction accordingly. I think it was something like hotspots where you can use the corners of the desktop to do something different. I know that presently, the cube will spin if I drag a window to the edge, but this is not for moving the window; I simply need to change desktop. I know about using the pager, and keyboard shortcuts. But it would be a nice feature to have in the settings panel somewhere. So without even using both hands (Clt-Alt-middle-click) or even clicking the mouse, you warp over to the next desktop in an instant.

Hello there,

i was waiting for Elive 2.0 for making Linux the primary OS for my notebook. When i get it, the problem occured.

My hardware configuration is:
ASUS X56VA
Core 2 Duo 2 GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 512

I got it really problematic to run direct rendering and 3d acceleration with any of suitable drivers. Was anyone able to get it with graphic card like mine?

I tried to install Catalyst 10.3 automatically, through .deb files using m-a to build and install (build ok, installation failed couse of some dependencies, dunno), using Envy... And I failed.

Can anyone tell me how should I do it to get accelleration, 3d effects and Ecomorph alive?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: problem with direct rendering solved. Now to set rendering method in compiz-check, couse atm i get NONE.

First post! Hi guys!

Sorry if this has already been answered, but I can't find it :work:

First of all: THIS IS AN AMAZING DISTRO! (I hope it's appropriate to SHOUT)

--------------------------
On to the problem:

I have Elive 1.9.51 installed on a EEEPC 701 (4g ssd, 2g ram, 900mhz)
I REALLY like how fast the compiz effects run on this distro, but I can't seem to get the Ecomorph module configured.

I enable the module.
I open the Ecomorph configuration window. (system >> ecomorph)
When the window comes up, it spans off the screen. That's alright, but any attempt to move it with the 'alt-click' just sends it flying off the screen or just places it randomly somewhere else, it mostly happens when the top of the window goes off screen....
Also, when i do get to an option tab, how do I disable an effect (i.e. the wobbly windows)?

The window moving deal hits all of my windows, which really kills the 'alt-click' function (and I really need that function, it's a lifesaver on a netbook).....

Is there a way to fix the window deal? or disable some of the Compiz features?

Thanks in advance!

New upgrade causes more problems than it fixes (6 replies)

I am having a love/hate relationship with this distro. After the last "upgrade" (which I had no control over, thanks to "fine tune") I have lost sound? I have the new Zotac ION-A motherboard that has all the newest, latest nVidia video & audio features supposedly E17 Compiz likes, but I seriously question if Than is staying up to date with technology.

I have a verified good ISO Download on DVD and here is the real mystery. When I run it as live CD, everything works, including sound. When I try to install it, lose sound and many compiz features, almost like a censored/reduced version (purposefully crippled) to discourage install over favoring using ONLY the live CD version. I know this sounds nuts, but what other explanation is there?

I am also aware the powers that be wish to charge for install (and I am more than happy to pay, if I can get something that works) so being naturally cynical, it seems the install version has been handicapped to force users into staying within the confines of the live CD. Bad, bad marketing decision if so. I am trying to make the transition to Linux, but all this frustration over something as basic as sound is making the task too much, I do not want to, nor intend to become a tech/nerd just to take advantage of linux.

I have submitted "bug" reports.....no response, have emailed Than direct, no response (know the guy has got to be busy) but if you read over this entire forum, you will notice most cries for help have, at best only one reply and usually that reply is useless. I question the real support value of the forum.

This "fine tune" monster is just that, a real disaster. It can screw up a perfectly installed system with its concept of change for the sake of change. What is they say about linux, if it works, keep changing it until it no longer works?

Can anyone tell me, in simple, easy to follow directions how to disable "fine tune"? I don't want it, don't need it, not trying to get hi-tech function out of E17-compiz, just like the eye candy and want to be able to access email, browse (have switched to Opera 10 to escape the sorry IceWeasel, boy did they ever name that right) and being able to watch movies and listen to music. That is not asking too much and I had E17-compiz doing all that along with the eye candy stuff UNTIL "fine tune" destroyed the whole shooting match in this latest (no choice given) upgrade. If I ever get this back to the way it was, I will remove or block from starting "fine tune" and could care less if I ever get updated from there.

Look how M$ screws up every OS with their patches, updates, service packs, etc. I am trying to come to linux to escape that madness.
Thanks for any help someone with empathy towards this point of view might provide, I know command line gurus will not appreciate/understand my intended use of linux.

Hello all, first time post and an elive noob so please, bear with me.

I have installed v1.9.42 and for the most part it seems ok except for a couple of things.

First, some of the keys on my keyboard wont type but will cause the text box to blink., some of them are E,R,T,N....the interesting thing is if i hit shift they work fine, cap and lower case. I have a logitech MX5500 keyboard, went through the menus, selected US and most variants of it and did the console too but nether console nor regular apps will work correctly. Thoughts?

Next, when i launch the elpanel, and click on things form within it, sometimes a box will appear with unreadable text and lines, anyone see this?

Can compiz be installed on top of the regular version as that one is more stable?

thanks all

I like this new release very much and when all the bugs are out it will be great. I have tried every distro over the years and I think this is one of the best. One of the things I noted and am having a hard time figuring out is why there is no way of seeing running apps after they are launched and minimized? I typically see that problem in Gnome with things like Skype but this distro will not show a lot of apps such as lastfm and several others. I have placed systom monitor in the apps panel so I can use that to shut down apps that are sleeping and I have no control of them. But I see no way to get to the icon dir and pick a icon for this app? I know much of this is my inexperience with E so if you have solutions for how to resolve this please give me a clue. Thanks again for a wonderful distro and I will continue to support your efforts with E.

New to linux, stumbling as I go. I figured out how to download and install Opera (far superior browser to IceWeasel) and contrary to what they try to tell you, IceWeasel and FireFox are NOT the same, did a side by side and IceWeasel's search results poorer and many sites could not open whereas FF did, but Opera 10 beats them all. Is there anyway to remove IceWeasel and designate Opera as default browser? Also, how do I put the Opera Icon in the center bottom shelf in place of the IceWeasel icon?

I also find apt-get seems not at all to work in E17 Compiz and Synaptic is really limited as what it shows as available to download and install over synaptic in other linux distros. Has this synaptic been edited/slimmed down to accomodate special E17-compiz use? Thanks for anticipated response.....

Using v.1.9.40-compiz, I have a hard lock-up that can occur after waking from suspending the computer. For instance, just now I had to hard-reset the machine when I started Picasa while using Opera, Iceweasel, Thunderbird, and a video in VLC going on at once.

This sort of thing has happened before with different apps open, and not just when trying to use Picasa. But it always happens after being suspended.

Also, the guide says to use Control+Alt+ End to reload, but this does not work when this happens. It is a very hard lock-up.

My advice is to always turn the thing off. Please post if you have any insight into this.

Hi, escaped prisoner from M$ trying to get up to speed with E17-Compiz. Downloaded latest version, 1.9.40 (terrific)....BUT, no sound (audio)---Denon player all blurred and nothing works(?),....audio CD extractor same, total bust.... funny I get sound from movie player for DVDs, not on CD or any internet sites that have sound ? Are there special codecs that need to be downloaded to play MP3's etc?

2nd query: Every time I boot, after boot completion, window comes up saying need to "fine tune", this takes about 15 mins and ends each time with: Error: Module slamr does not exist in /proc/modules? I got an approved install during the install process, so something is triggering a need for "fine tuning" each and every time, no other linux distro I am trying has this complication.

3rd query: E17-compiz simply will not shut down. Select shutdown, window pops up confirming but asks to "please wait" and nothing happens, 10 mins later, same situation, finally have to Alt + SysRq+O to get the thing to shut down....I am not comfortable having to do that.

Are these bugs or is my lack of knowledge in things linux/E17-compiz the fault. Appreciate non-technical answer with no assumption I know code for fix.....thanks....feel free to answer by email: vincent4success@gmail.com

Hi,

I have elive-compiz installed on my Acer 8930G and have managed to solve all issues debian or elive specific except the wifi.
Ndiswrapper does not work with the Intel 5100 wlan chips and the default kernel on elive-compiz dows not have the iwlagn module installed. However even when I try and install a new kernel elive insists on using the same 2.26.8 kernal which does not work. I have followed all the installation instructions for installing the drivers but as long as iwlagn is not installed or run or found by the kernel the card will not work.

Is there a way to fix this problem? Is there a way to install the wlagn module into kernel 2.26.8 or force the booting of a different kernel?

thank you

you should be able to login to the Failsafe mode which will get you to the command prompt. Enter the command "su" to enter your root pwd. then type scite /etc/X11/Xorg.conf
(scite should work here, since the elpanel worked for me there)
make sure that under the "Screen" section it reads: DefaultDepth 24
