I have seen this same question on previous versions. Was wondering how to make persistent a live USB created with Unetbootin. I tried even with Topaz but never got anywhere. Hassle for me to use live usb with elive2.1.40 because I have to reinstall the b43 wifi driver each time, so persistence would be nice.

Otherwise great distro
with new live-cd version 2.1 I can't establish internet-connection with 3G-Modem with my portuguese provider kanguru.pt, let it be with costumed APN (myconnection), let it be alterated (kanguru-portatil), let it be blank, what works at the moment at opensuse12.2
By the way, this zenith-installer does not give a lot of choices, what about including networkmanager-applet, what seems to be most effective in the moment?
Tried it with wvdial, but I don't remember well how to do this: angry
Anyway, nice to see Agust here also, after charming experiences with his themes in bodhi and lately in opensuse!

2.1.23 Initial Remarks (no replies)

2.1.23 Alpha is looking great. I had some sound-related issues that were cleared up by the audio configurator, the only remaining one was getting my USB videocam's microphone to function during the test call on Skype. If I would have spent more time I think I could have resolved it.

Kdenlive was installed via Synaptic as I ran Elive from a USB key (just to see) and worked with my connected video camera. KDE apps look like crap at the moment, but I was thrilled to see updated applications throughout the system.

I really wanted to like Bodhi on my AMD APU system, but I think I like this better, even at alpha:

*only three repos instead of a dozen or more on Bodhi, just to get the software I want.
*Related to the above, the system is useful out-of-the-box, rather than all the work required to get Bodhi up to speed.
*I can select text size from the initial help screens, nice!
*Very fast and pretty. A lot of the little touches make this a very credible alternative to Windows and Mac.

Thanks to you devels for the hard work. Wow.

Once in a while I still boot up the live CD of Topaz when I'm at a public wifi station (It's actually a partition on my laptop, so no disc required). But when I try to reload in synaptic, I get 404s instead. I recall there was a patch for installed 'Elive' but I am not sure it will work with this live CD version. What are the current US elive repos now? (or what does the update do, under the covers anyway)

Hello,

I just found out about Elive and tested it in a virtual machine.

I fell in love how beautifull this is! I tried Opengeu, yellow dog but they coulnd't statisfy my needs.
The Elive in the virtual machine experiencce was great. Time for phase 2, installing it on my Pavillion dm1.
At least, that's what i thougt. First I wanted to test in live mode if everything works.
Everything worked for me except one thing. The wireless connection.

It gave me an a error message that I needed to install it with the nurse(repair). I figured out that this option is only useable if you have the have the installed version. Which you can get if you pay for this OS. I would like to pay for a such beautifull OS if I only knew if everything works well.
I don't know this at the moment. So prepare yourself for here comes my question...
Is there any way to test if the wireless can work on the live mode?

I hope there is a way to do that.

Hello,

I downloaded the stable version iso of elive to test it, "burning" it on my USB stick. I used UNetbootin to put in on my USB stick and then followed the instructions given in the Howtos to configure grub. I t finally seemed working and I tried booting with USB, yet, the BIOS sees my USB device but won't boot on it even if I force it on the BIOS boot order sequence, instead it runs my usual grub menu. I tried the USB on my other machine and it worked perfectly. I wonder if my USB controller can't boot with the stick or if the issue comes from something else.
I tried burning a CD, but my CD recorder seems dead, I face some writing errors during burning. (It's quite old and I have some other problems with it sometimes).

I think I would have to give some infos about my USB controller but I don't know exactly which ones.
Thanks for your help.

Hi I'm new to Linux - hoping to convert from windows, but I have been unable to boot Elive from USB. I think that I will stick with windows. Downloaded stable iso (elive_2.0_Topaz_new-kernel_up002) to hard drive. Down loaded special Elive Unetbootin file to USB stick and then followed instructions and installed the iso file to this boot disk. Everything appeared to finish and work during Unetbootin install. When I reboot the USB is not recognized as a boot disk and windows boots. I have just managed to make a USB boot for Backtrack 4 using Unetbootin which works fine on a seperate USB stick (I'm not totally computer inept!). My computer is set to boot from USB first. When I followed the Unetbootin (Elive) set up I specified the correct USB drive and source for the iso from harddrive. Seems to take a long time during install ( extracting/copying iso to boot file stage (last 2 files -98% seems to drag on for another ten minutes?), but in the end the boot file is produced and then prompted to reboot, with no joy.
Appreciate if anyone has any advice as I really loved the look of Elive, and was hoping to ditch windows all together, but no so sure now.

special for usb version of Elive & install prob (1 reply)

Hi
I am anxious to try Elive gem, but want to do it right. I am not totally new to linux, but new enouigh to still be nervous. I have a couple of questions.

1] In the How To instructions under Advantages of putting elive on USB

it mentions special for usb version of Elive
I have looked all over your site and cannot find this SPECIAL VERSION
Where would I get it?

2] I downloaded the elive stable, checked my md5 sum, it was good.
I proceeded to format usb drive and install elive on usb as per instructions for Linux mode.
opened a terminal as root in /media/

grub-install --recheck --no-floppy --root-directory=/media/SNG800 /dev/sdd

It returned the error:
WARNING! You are trying to invoke the unsupported grub-install script
with a parameter. To really do this, call grub-install.unsupported.
You should rather call "yast2 bootloader" or create configuration files appropriate for the intended target.
The distro I am currently using is openSuse 11.2.
IN the Linux mode instructs it says "It is recommended to do this from an Elive system and specially the same version that you want to put on the USB, also from the same machine"
I don't have an elive system, but I am trying to get one.
Please help
Thanks

I tend to disable drop shadows because it produces a weird effect: the shadow of each window is everywhere. The terminal window is on workspace 1, but when I go to workspace 2, 3 or 4 the shadow is also there, with an 'invisible' terminal. If I open up another terminal, or a browser, they will also throw their shadows on the other workspaces. I have an nvidia 6200 and Topaz picks newest nvidia drivers (heh, makes me feel like I have new hardware. Thanks, Elive!) Has anybody seen this effect, and fixed it? I would like to report it as a bug but that bug report page needs another password, not the forum password. BTW, right now, I am trying to enable the ecomorph dropshadow; all of the above is about the separate dropshadow module. I tried that first; ecomorph does not want to enable the effect, it seems.

Live USB on Dell Mini 1012 producing an error on boot... (12 replies)

Hi folks, Just joined and this is my first question in your fine forum.

I bought a Dell Mini 1012 for the express purpose of installing Elive 2.0 on it as it's principal OS. I made a live USB of Elive and ran it on my old Dell Inspiron 700m laptop, where it loaded and ran perfectly. When running it on the new Mini 1012, the USB goes through the entire boot up sequence and ultimately fails at a point where it gives me a graphical system error. The error is as follows:

Problem running the Graphical System
(EE) No devices detected

It then sends me to a screen titled "Graphical System Finished" which gives me the following options:

* Start X - Restart your graphical session
* reconfigure - reconfigure your graphical system and launch it
* install - Install Elive in your computer
* console - Boot login console
* reboot - reboot your computer
* shutdown - shutdown your computer

I chose "reconfigure your graphical system and launch it" and reset the screen resolution manually to 1024x600; hit ok and got the same error.

The hardware specs on the machine are as follows:

* Processor: Intel Atom Processor N450 (1.66GHz, 512K L2 Cache)
* RAM: 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz (1 DIMM)
* HD: 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
* Video: Intel NM10 Express
* Network Card: Dell 1397 802.11B/G Wireless Mini Card
* 6 Cell Primary Battery
* 10.1 inch Widescreen Display (1024x600)

If anyone has any idea what could be going on and how I might go about solving this I would appreciate it greatly. I REALLY loved Elive on my tests and think it woud be perfect on this machine, if I can get it running.

Thanks in advance for your help.

i downloaded the 2.0 iso with a bunch of other distros for the sake of sampling.

i verified the md5 on all distros. elive wouldn't burn on k3b. some kind of error about the program not liking the medium.
i tried using imgburn on windows but received an error there as well. there was a difference between the size of the image and the size of the disk.
all of the other distros burnt fine and i went on to use the disk (that elive wouldn't install on) to install another distro that was totally functional.

i've heard good things about elive. i was hoping it would work out.
i tried to post this yesterday and for some reason, was unable to. it submitted properly, just never posted.
just thought you folks would want to know about this.

Hello, I've tested ELive Topaz 2.0 on a Virtual Machinne (VBox in Ubuntu ).
I really like it, I've burned to a CD.
When i start the CD (in Normal Mode), I have a Black Screen after start, but i can hear start music.
(I thing that this problem is because My Laptop (LenovoG550) doesn't support this kernel version.
(When I test Ubuntu Jaunty Live CD, i must run in "nomodeset" mode to start with graphical mode.)

I've tried to CTRL+F1, and restartx, but i get the same error.
The mode Graphical Safe, also doesn't work and the mode "Black Screen" also doesn't work.

Any idea for this "error" ??
Can i upgrade the linux kernel from live cd and make a new live cd??
