HOWTO: Getting more recent packages on Elive, such as OpenOffice 2.2 etc

ok i just learnt from the debian guys about their etch backport repo.

NOTE:

for some reason this forum is bracketing my links, so if there is a bracketed link just float over it or right click it to see the full address, you'll need to put this address with http and all that, not the brackets thing!.

So at your own risk (but i had no troubles at all) you can do the below to get a load of newer versions of apps and stuff. This is just an attempt at a guide for me, if anyone can update/add to it or improve it go for it:

1. open up synaptic package manager from terminal or elive menu.

2. goto settings/repositories and then add new repository.

3. keep the pull down as binary .deb

4. add the address url:
http://www.backports.org/debian/

5. put in distribution box: etch-backports

6. and in sections put: main contrib non-free

7. right now you can ok that and close synaptic. Then open up a terminal and put:

su wget -O -
http://backports.org/debian/archive.key
| apt-key add -

7. right now open up synaptic again and press reload. then go to settings/preferences (again still in synaptic) and then click the Distribution tab. then got to prefer versions from: and select debian backports option. ok that.

8. Then you can mark all upgrades and it'll install all sorts of updated stuff like openoffice, wine and anything else you use that it has a newer version of.

Hope this helps.

Jonah

ps hope i don't get into trouble, hope this doesnt cause any probs as it worked for me. i just wanted to help people, so if this is wrong or not allowed then please delete this post. thanks.

hi sorry it's prob just the formatting of this forum, below is the debian page with instructions at the bottom of how to add the keys in, just click on this link:

this forum doesn't show full link addresses so the key address isn't showing up right in my howto. maybe someone can help with formatting in here, i don't get it...

Worked good for me, sort of.

When i press "reload" in synaptic i get an error about the signature when its gets to the new backports. But it still lets me use it so im not worried. :D

Thanks a lot.

EDIT: its all fixed now
