No GRUB no boot

No GRUB no boot
August 09, 2007 08:12AM
I have tried to install the beta Elive for MacBook.

1.- I've booted the Live-CD.

2.- I've particioned the disk like this (transcription of gparted screen):

/dev/sda1 fat32 /mnt/Windows_C (I think is Refit)

/dev/sda2 hfs+ /mnt/MacOsX

/dev/sda3 reiserfs /mnt/sda3

/dev/sda4 linux-swap

3.- I've introduced the root password, user name, user password and machine name.

4.- I've waited until a message appeared to me... it "says" something like: installation have been correct... restart your computer.

Nothing about Grub or Lilo... it's the reason that I can't boot the Elive, becasue when i do it in the refit menu, a error message appears, something like: "No boot device - put a disk to boot and press any key"

What can I do?

Thanks and sorry for my spanish-english.

Reboot with the live cd, then open a terminal :

su

mkdir /mnt/target

mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/target

chroot /mnt/target

apt-get update

apt-get install refit lilo

gptsync

liloconfig /dev/sda3

It works for me, i'm not a good teacher, I use GNU/Linux since 7 years so that it's simple for me is maybe incredible hard for you...

The better way is to run gptsync after partitioning the disk, reboot with the live cd and re-install without partitioning again using already created partitions.

You can run gptsync from rEFIt bootloader with partitioning tool option.

wink

(Hope it's my last edition... In french we say "talking english like a spanish cow" :D )

Thanks Magnet for your quick answer, but I can't execute all steps of your advice...

mkdir /mnt/target/ = no problem it's OK

mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/target = no problem it's OK

chroot /mnt/target = no problem it's OK

aptitude update && aptitude upgrade = no problem it's OK

In that step starts the problems:

aptitude install refit lilo

gptsync

root@Elive[/]# aptitude install refit lilo

The problem is evident, it isn't the sda device (of course not the sda3 device too) in /dev... I don't know why... I'm going to execute gptsync after the partitioning the disks and then reinstall again.

I accept another suggestions/advices.

Thanks! wink

Ouch !

Normal... You have to synchronize partition table in normal mode, not in chroot... sorry...

su
apt-get update

apt-get install refit

gptsync /dev/sda

And after do the rest.

Too late... but your firs advice:

"You can run gptsync from rEFIt bootloader with partitioning tool option."

combinated with the other one:

"The better way is to run gptsync after partitioning the disk, reboot with the live cd and re-install without partitioning again using already created partitions."

Works!!

I boot from lilo and now I'm setting up the configuration of my distro!

Thanks a lot!

Guys, thank you so much for testing Elive!
Without your tests, Thanatermesis has nothing to go on to be able to improve it.
So stay in touch and help us make Elive THE BEST distro... EVER! emosmile
