I can think of a couple of things that would make Elive better, especially on laptops:

1) Power Management: Elive needs an implementation of powersaved with a nice GUI front end for suspend/resume of laptops! idea

2) In the network preferences, there should be a way to have Elive not to waste boot time doing DHCP requests for active interfaces without a connection. For example, if eth0 is active but there's no ethernet cable plugged in, Elive shouldn't (as it does now) sit for an extra 30 seconds during boot making DHCP requests for a connection that isn't there. Same thing for wireless connections. I know that you can deactivate the interface to avoid this, but there needs to be an "activate on hotplug" option. hug

3) Finally (for now hmmmm ) Enlightenment needs an easier, more intuitive way of adding apps and app icons to menus, the ibar, and so on. Messing with eap's and Entangle is just too cumbersome and counterintuitive. Ideally, you should be able to drag and drop applications onto the ibar and engage, as in Mac OSX.

That's all for now. cry

Rebi, I think for point 3) that you can drop apps to ibar, but not the whole app, you drop there the icon of running app.

I would like tex package in elive (tetex or texlive), but I know, it is big to fit to a single CD, what about DVD?

Add wifi-wiz (great for laptops, and multihomed pc's)

Something I would really love to have is similar to Ubuntu with Synaptic checking for updates after log in.

I know it's very un-power user, but I really miss that feature from Ubuntu.

Failing that, an option of putting synaptic in the ibar/menus would be great also, I'm always playing around with it, and sometimes I get frustrated having to click through the elpanel to get it.

Oh, I and totally agree. The whole eap thing is irritating and needlessly time-consuming - the .png files you need can be in three diferent places, some apps don't have icons, won't be added automatically to the menus, etc.

But this is really a problem with Enlightenment, not Elive. I'm not a programmer, but I don't really understand why they did it that way. So many other things in Enlightenment are very user-friendly and straightforward, it surprises me that they missed so badly with icons...

I can think of some things i saw that should be added.

For instance an easy way to make screenshots, and to change the language.

I personally don't mind opening up a new console to write "setxkbmap sk" bt still.

Also i think that the useradd/del text commands should be repaired.

Oh and sudo. If thath's at all possible.

Bertram, I have set my sk (zdravim) language through elpanel - language option and I have a working sk keyboard with english characters using Alt Gr key...
It is also possible to choose language when you install to HDD.

In newer version, E17 uses .desktop files instead of .eap files. :D

It's possible to include pidgin in Elive repository ? It is better than Gaim I think...

1. wine shortcuts support

2. an elive backports/updated software website like getdeb.net on ubuntu so we can install some latest versions of things we need - that site is awesome, would be great for elive something like that.

3. an update manager that pops up in the minimize tray / and built in package manager, or at least synaptic on the menus and stuff by default.

4. a volume module, just a slider up and down that sits on corner of desktop so you don't have to open the alsa mixer up

5. a boot up splash screen instead of all that text

6. and i agree about pidgin and updated software which goes back to point 2 so it's there for those who want it

I would like to see Elive work by default with a Tablet Computer, specifically a tablet computer with an active digitizer pen.

Even more specifically the Wacom Pen enabled tablet like the one found on the Fujitsu T4210 and other Fujitsu T series models.

A newer kernel... maybe 2.6.20 or 21?

Still I liked the KDE possibility where in the taskbar you could simply change the keyboard layout from lets say English to Russian and back. (without using root)
The problem is now that I can change the keyboard with root-password but I can't put it back (due to the changed keyboard and the impossibility to changed it without using root password)

gedit instead of gvim for default text editor

gvim has given me too many errors (cache errors)

What about having the option to not format your HDD while installing and being able to choose an existing partittion as home and not formatting that?
I used the Elive that came with Linux Format and erased some existing media data in my second HDD (wasn't important, but still)
Any chance of this soon so I start installing it in my other PC?
Great distro BTW clap

I have another ideaidea what about a wallpaper manager like the one in KDE? I mean using KDE i could have a lot (and i mean a lot) of wallpapers and KDE switched them automatically. I really missed the chance to see all my wallpapers.

I would like to see a tweak option during install where we can choose to install the default elive or a stripped down version so we can decide which software we want

Hi;

I would like to have AWN as a dock-environment at the bottom of my screen...

And wouldn't mind a MAC-taskbar too at the top of my screen!

My last post was joking but in all seriousness most "wishes" come down to wishing for another system within a system. I'm a little confused on this. If you want a Mac, get a Mac. I personally do not want a Mac and am fed up with Microcrook. Linux distros are naturally going to be lacking something here or there but I think we should all be real about expectations.

what about a version with opera browser, huh?

what about a 64 bits version?

Hello, emosmile

about opera - good idea
~~~~~~~~~~~
yep first thing after elive installation was,
opera browser, but still iceweasel is good even if i don't use it, it's nicely done in elive
about file manager
~~~~~~~~~~~
THUNAR as default fm - why (mmm is is more stable ? as i tried it seems hm)
there is more configurable and with tabs browsing PCMAN file manager (bear in mind that I'm not using much neither one but i prefer pcman cause of tabs and more configurations, i more prefer double sided fm's like emelfm xnc or krusader), so pcman m ?

"network browser like konqueror"

Ok, that aside, I know what you mean. There are a few Samba browsers around, search in the repo. 'smb-browser' may not be there... ask LinuxNIT

@Burnie
"copy/paste capabilities in terminal"

@stanca
"ext4"

I agree with you on most of this, but I would like to see better wifi support in the next release to work with almost any netbook out there.

I wish conky (my favorite system monitor) would work on ecomorph; currently the refresh on it blurs all text and doesn't get painted properly. gkrellm is nice, but sometimes a compact horizontal version that takes only 1 or 2 lines are enough, especially on certain screen sizes.

Asus EeePC 1000H [Elive 2.0 Topaz]
Toshiba Satellite p10-802 -ATI video, ATI chipset, RealTech audio- [Elive 2.0 Topaz]
I hate ATI... but I love Elive. It work with ATI with no problem.

- Numlock activation at login screen
- Mozilla Firefox as standard browser, because the most plugins doesn't run with iceweasel. Automatic firefox updates like LinuxMint.
