Installing Updated Apps via Synaptic

hi my name is rick and im new to this distro.i see its debian based,can you install any deb package?

No not any, best is to see if you can download the program with synaptic because it checks the dependency's for you.
If it isn't there you can try to install it still, but there is no guaranty it will work for sure.

there is no other way to install appz than synaptic? i mean like ubuntu

i'm worry about orphan packages

Yes you can install deb packages, just download and they will install with G Debi package installer.

And if things don't work out, apt-get remove problemfoo or apt-get purge problemfoo. Ohh the power of apt

Just a hint for some of you who need updated apps that do not have readlily available .debs, or the source compiling fails somehow.

When I went looking for Xiphos, a Bible-study app, the dependencies where scattered all over the place and there was no .deb available.

I keep the Debian "unstable" repos available for things like this. Google how to add these repos (deb and deb-src) to your Synaptic repositories list. Don't leave these repos enabled all the time or you will screw things up.

Searched and found Xiphos 3.1.1, pretty much up-to-date. It found all the dependencies it needed, and I was very careful to check the final pre-install pop-up to make sure it was not removing important stuff.

That last point is very important. One package I was trying to install, VLC 1.0 I think, wanted to remove E17. I'm using the .8 version, needless to say.

I like what I see on the live CD, but wondered about some applications that would make an install better than what I would otherwise get with Debian.

Are there plans to have some updated applications exclusive to Elive? I really like the way things are shaping up for the next Ubuntu, primarily OpenShot, which just had an update today. Perhaps doing such things would mess up various dependencies and such. If that's the case I'd completely understand and move on.

On the other hand, being able to dpkg most anything... again, as long as the dependencies are in stable Debian... is a real plus. The liveCD flies with Google Chrome installed. Will there be any extra application CDs produced, as in days of yore?

It is Stable Debian. It is very Stable And it is work much better (stable) then Ubuntu. But, you can try to find some bilds of new versions programms specialy for lenny. Or build it yourself. Or use packages from Ubuntu hardy (It is lenny). BUT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I hate ATI... but I love Elive. It work with ATI with no problem.

I have installed the following into Elive using .deb packages

Google Chrome
Google Picasa
Adobe Reader
Pidgin for facebook

All are running and i'm not having any issues at this time...

Yeah, those .debs go on pretty easy. OpenOffice is another (3.2, not the one in Synaptic).

BUT things that could radically transform Elive, like OpenShot and Banshee 1.5/6, depend on stuff we don't have in our libraries. So....

Yes using Debian Lenny instead of an older version as the base for Elive was a terrible mistake!! which means we are stuck with old apps...funnily enough u*****u 10.10 has the opposite problem, seems its libraries are too uptodate to install the enna media center and forget rpm based distros! Crazy world of Linux but we love it all the same
