Elive 1.0 Gem fails to boot
July 07, 2008 12:59AM
Hello,

when i started my PC with the Elive-CD, i got the following crash message(after loading the kernel):

PCI: BIOS Bug: MFCG area at e0000000 is not E820-reserved
PCI: Not using MMCONFIG
PCI: cannot allocate resource region 0 of device 0000:00:00.0

something wrong with the image mounting

Busybox ..

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)

:(

On my primary host-system, i burned the iso image with Brasero and did an additional verify-run: the cd was (and is) ok.

I played with BIOS settings as well as with boot menu settings of the Elive-CD, but nothing worked.

As a last resort, I've put the disc into my second(legacy) system, and voilĂ ! it booted and worked flawlessly. emosmile

However, i would like to use Elive on my primary system. Maybe someone out there has an idea how to work around the problem?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello thht,
Looks like there is some problem reading the cd especially because you tell it's working fine on another system.

I'm getting something similar with Elive 1.0 Gem --

...
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.

PCI: Not using MMCONFIG.

... and that's it. I checked the MD5 and also burned a second CD. I copied the message above from an attempted install on an eeePC, but I get a similar message when attempting to run the CD on my main desktop system (Lenovo 8811-E4U). I'm using two different CD drives.

Any ideas? The distro looks great, I can't wait to give it a try.

Follow up..
I tried the same CD in an old Micron with a PIII and 256M RAM.

Wow.

Not only does it work, it's beautiful!

Though not helpful, I'm getting the same error message.
It boots fine on my old laptop, but I'd really like it to work on my desktop too.

By the way, this distro looks fantastic!

It doesn't help, but it also won't boot on my laptop with the same error code.

I've got a Sony Vaio VGN-FW21E

To all above, I think the kernel in 1.0 is to old for newer computers, that's why it works in the older computers and not the newer ones.Try the development version of elive and see if that works. hmmmm

I think that bit should be better promoted.
I though it would be a nice alternative to Vista, but now I hear the PC that could run Vista smoothly can't even run the stable version of Elive.

So what happens to people who have paid for the distro and find out that their new hardware isn't supported by Elive? They get a refund?

Btw, when will new hardware be supported by the stable version???

This really sucks... I have burned 3 cds at the slowest possible speed and still cant get the system to go into live mode. I am not new to Linux and definitely not new to installing distros.

And the worst part is that I easily go into the live cd and all works well when I use VirtualBox. But when I try to boot from the CD from scratch I get the same mounting error.

abhilashkumar, I think elive 1.0 kernel is to old to boot in the newer computers. Why don't you try the development version and see if it works? I know thanatermesis will work with you about the pay when elive 2.0 comes out.

You could try to use the development version instead, for your desktop
