Live CD problem.
July 29, 2007 03:13PM
On my laptop /IBM iSeries/ Elive starts good and without problems but after login screen I have only flashing /through 1-2 sec./ screen.

Any suggestions where can be the problem?

It is not the CD. It is in perfect shape as it starts, runs and installs /and the check shows that it is in perfect shape/ on my other laptop.

Non ducor, duco!

Is there a 'safe' video mode to choose? (1st booting)

bad graphical configuration

what graphic card you have ?

try other options of the boot

Try:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
and you get the errors that the graphical system have that don't starts

Show us 2 things from root:

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

and

cat /etc/X11/Xorg.conf | grep Driver

Now I have another problem! I exchanged my laptop with almost same but GC is Trident CyberBlade-Ai1. Now the boot stops at screen "System start in progres, hold on please" and freezes there! After 3 min. shows following:
Loading, please wait...
[: missing ]
[: missing ]
irg 15: nobody cared (try booting with the "irgpoll" option)
etc.

This post is quite similar as in another thread 'cause I hope to get help soon! I have a similar sceen issue and my MD5 seems ok. The screeen goes jumpy with grayish colours and you can vaguely see a line with numbers and letters but it's barely visible. This happens before the login.
I have an old P2 intelMMX 233MHz, 160MB RAM with S3 Trio 64V+ video adapter, 10Gig IDE drive with windows2000 on one partition about 1/2 of the drive. I read that Elive works well with very little processor power so I gave it a try.

Note: I tried 6 different distros for slower computers and all could not recognise my video card, also some fatal error messages for acpi for thermal/fan, RDSP failed, among other problems. Anyone knows a) what are they b)how to get them to work and C)where are the drivers ect...

I just read that I should add two line commands to get error reports at boot; I will try but I am still posting my computer and vid. card's specs in advance in case thanatermesise's team might have something on them!

One distro at least loaded with sound missing and the other is in french but ironically worked the best for my old metal hunk.
At this point any distro in english that runs at least a bit faster than Win2000 with firefox (is Opera possible?), audio capabilities (download, listen to and burn audio, and the possibility of glimpsing at streaming video so I can download and transfer to my better computer) even if it's choppy, would work for that computer! I read that there are people running various distros on equally old laptops so why can't I (still prefer Elive)?

Thanx in avance! Note/complaint: Why is (linux)it hard in the start-up! Why can't the learning curve be smoother for a newbie like me!?

Note, to whomever changed some words in my post:
I don't appreciate it 'cause I'm starting to think how can I trust the advice on this forum if it is run as such that my post can be changed any ol way by someone else. You don't really know what I or others think of microsoft or other OS but your'e infringing on my right to speak so go to !#@$#! I am loosing faith in this forum reall fast esp. since I am new to linux and the whole programming thing is new for me; I keep reading about why linux is not popular- are you an elitist? Thanks alot and good luck! I'm pissed after all the hours and days working on the computer and crash learning everything- I haven't got the humor left!

Streams&dragonflies,
I don't see what anyone may have or done to take you to this level of irritation, but we're all here to help each other out. Not piss each other off.
Also, if you are irritated because of lack of support, there are other distros. why not try DSL(if you prefer Debian) and add the enlightenment repos if you just like the WM?
I am running Slax on an old IBM P1 laptop and it seems to run fine.

**NOTE**
I am not trying to defer you from Elive. You just seem to be aggravated, and I remember that when I first jumped into the Linux pool, I just wanted something that "just worked."

Curious, I figured I'd check my thread, 'cause I was tired and not in a good mood the last time. I realised what had really happened just after I left this forum that time. Those who programmed this forum thought it would be cute to put in automatic edits to people's posts for some famous terms like for B. Gate's OS's and one of the most popular distros around.

I regret accusing any forum user! We are all learning, and I believe that the vast majority of linux users/creators are cool. Perhaps it's not uncommon practice in other forums to have automated edits as inside jokes-I'm no long time user .... If anyone is curious about examples of what I am talking about they can google Xhackuna matata and M$ and they will see the examples on people's posts.

I figured out that Hackuna matata is Swahili for no troubles or don't worry be happy. Ok so the programmers are trying to be cute or mischievous and yes I giggled when I saw Windows being termed Windblows instead by people on the net. But sorry to the programmers of this forum- if the said easy distro was such a breeze- then trying to install an old version of one such distro version wouldn't have (with my help) wiped out my drive on the old computer! As far as Elive- I don't know 'cause it still did not recognise my graphics card the least bit so I could't get to any log in or splash page...and I don't know if I scared forum users off with my previous tired rant!
