i am using Elive+Compiz. since there was no email client installed by default i installed Icedove. with this setup i can not click mailto links and have Icedove open to a compose window. i have looked around for a "default applications" configuration but have found none. am i missing something?

It has been quite a while since I have corrected this problem and I am on another computer in the shop.
It seems that you just go to edit, top left of screen, then preferences. Go over to applications then down to mailto. It will have several choices tap other. Icedove will be in the /usr/bin/ go down to Icedove tap then start and you will be ready to go.

Well, I had the same problem; clicking on an email address did not bring up icedove email client new message window.

The explanation from zrdc28 is the configuration necessary within "ICEWEASEL", not icedove. I found out after spending 30 minutes looking in icedove but not finding the right place; (got me mentally complaining about life in general!!) only later seeing the correct path to follow was in iceweasel.

those are the correct instructions - but it doesn't work. i have it set in Iceweasel but when a mailto is clicked Icedove does nothing.

I don't use any more a specific mail client, I only use webmail. But I remember I had the same problem in the past with Firefox/Thunderbird. Just google "firefox mailto thunferbird" and you'll find the solution. For example, see this link [forum.ubuntu-fr.org], in french sorry, but understandable however?
