opengeus is the only serious competition for Elive. But its not as polished as Elive and they too have issues with donations to fund their servers/repos. And now they are moving away from ubuntu to the debian base like Elive they are much farther behind Elive in the development process.
Moreover as in the Elive FAQs there has been a long lived confusion over the word "Free". Free when talking about linux does not mean free as we use the word in everyday life but in Linux talk free means the code behind everything you see is openly available to everyone i.e. its not proprietary.
Remember even Ubuntu and SuSe have huge financial backing. Suse was Novel and now Microsoft and Ubuntu is sponsored by Canonical.
E17 is still considered too unstable to be packaged with either Ubuntu or SuSe. So you are left with manual installs which can mess up your other settings. In Ubuntu I had problems with the Authentication settings after manually installing E17 and had to use work around to fix this and other problems. Furthermore, the only straight forward manual installs of E17 are found only on Ubuntu, Debian and SuSe just google install instructions for other distro. They are not for the faint hearted!! Just try installing ArcLinux or Gentoo!
I do agree the installer payment system needs better thinking or at least better explanation, especially when it comes to multi-machine installs and future dev versions.
I understand why T went to payment per install but like all good ideas its not always the sensible solution. Anyways $15 is not a lot, but what worries me is do you pay again if an install dies and can only be reinstalled from scratch. Having a more flexible installer module may have been a better way to go.
