1.9.. Zeitgeist doesn't save keybd for Sweden or Norway

1.9.. Zeitgeist doesn't save keybd for Sweden or Norway
March 23, 2010 01:01PM
When I boot up I can use F4 to choose language. I have tested Sweden and Norway but none get saved. It defaults to US or English keyboard which I have no practice to use.

I can go into Cli and write setxkbmap se and that works but to do that each time is kind of not what one expect of a distro.

Are there some way can force it to always chose Swedish keyboard. The buttons I want in English so it is only the keyboard that is important to be Swedish.

This is a common problem well not so much a problem as a " I must remember to do after I install"

1
Left click anywhere on your desktop select Settings.

2
In the Enlightenment Configuration window that comes up, select Language.

3
This will bring up the language options

4
Now select Keyboard and enter your root password when asked

5
The keyboard configuration windows will come up

6
Now you just have to click on the sideways triangles beside the keyboard layout types to select your keyboard language. For example under qwerty you should see US american, Brazilian, British, etc.

7
Scroll down the list and you should see both Norwegian and Swedish

8
Select the language you want to use and click OK and follow the on screen instructions from there. You don't really need to do anything other than clicking OK or accept from this point on. But you should test your keys are working as you want.

Once complete your system should default to either Norwegian or Swedish depending on which language you chose.

Thanks,

oops why did I not thought of that one. I trusted too much that I have already told it I want setxkbmap se so I did trust the OS to remember that to next time.

I do as you describe tomorrow. Bit late tonight have to tend to other things.
thanks indeed for describing it in detail. Much appreciated.

Typical of me to fail to make it work. I did to the best of my knowledge as you wrote but it didn't take.

I had to write setxkbmap se in the terminal to get åäö. Maybe the unstable version has a bug on setting sweden or norway? I test again after a reboot.

But thanks indeed for caring about me.
Re: 1.9.. Zeitgeist doesn't save keybd for Sweden or Norway

don't worry it took me a while to realize what was going on. Basically unlike some other versions of linux Elive doesn't ask you to select your keyboard layout or timezone during install so it defaults to the US layout.

Hopefully it should work fine after reboot. The keymap is a very standard and basic thing in any OS and is not related to Elive so you should not really be having any problems with it. The problem you are having is very unusual.

You may also want to try other keyboard layouts other than qwerty it could just be that the layout you are used to is not qwerty (i.e. the first 6 keys next to the tab key). Or that the Debian/Elive translation setup of qwerty is not the one you are used to.

something went wrong when the OS wanted to repair something on the harddisk after a cold reboot so it went south and failed to boot so

I wonder if you could help me find a safe downlad of the one you recommended.

I have elive_1.9.61-zeitgeist_unstable.iso because that was the only one apart from 2.0 that one could download. I downloaded both and have 2.0 on an USB and the elive_1.9.61-zeitgeist_unstable on an old compaq presario 8143 that I have set apart as my linux test machine.

Can you find elive_1.9.60 to download somewhere? I spent hours on google to try to find it.

I am sure of that pirate torrent has it but I want a download I can trust.

did not work for me. Maybe some ad block issue or something with them.

could you go to the link as a common user and see if it works for you. I guess it works as an upload but it says there is not file there now when I look.

Since I wrote my post I found out that mtPaint in puppy431std had a screenshot that worked in same way.
The only two that I ahve found with the features I need so I am in no hurry now.

Now it works! Thanks

Are you sure that the 60 is that much better than the 61 they have now?
I mean will it really solve my problem with getting a stable os? okay worth a try that is for sure but have you tested both? Or have others reported problems with the ...61 that ...60 didn't have?

O by the way you should know that PayPal is a proper bank now and not just a payment system so any transaction you make through them will be secured and guaranteed.

In fact a lot of companies use PayPal as their payment system now. I for one will never buy or sell anything online with anything other than PayPal. I even have found it cheaper and faster to transfer money between different currency accounts using PayPal than my normal bank.

Also the system keeps a log/statement of every transaction you make via PayPal and you can view this history so you can always keep track of what is going on. Which is something you should do with your normal bank account anyway. Yes your PayPal account is linked to your bank account and or credit card but it will only access them if you tell it to.

I have used it for almost 7years now and have had no problems or security issues. The only thing they could do to make it more secure is to have a password/password system where you give your full password when you setup the account but on every log-in you are asked for only 3 or so of the characters in your password in a random way so you never enter the same characters every time you login. Just a security measure against key recognition hacks.

I think about the paypal later. I am in no hurry. Thanks for telling your experience of it and for sending the file. Much appreciated.

Since then I have found that puppy431std can do everything that elive can so no hurry getting it to work.

I managed to dl your file now and will burn it to usb and test it and report back about the progress.

"T" warn that one should not chose Ext2 but as far as I know puppy use ext2 so me want to be compatible with puppy linux.

Is it better to use fat32 then so windows can read it? emosmile

Puppy failed with using ext4 when I tried it. But me is computer idiota.

from what I know of Elive 61 does not mean improvement on 60 unless they are the same release types. Otherwise you will be comparing apples with oranges. Even when they are the same release type later versions are not always more stable as I discovered with Elive-Compiz. None of the Elive-Compiz versions released after version 1.9.40 was stable on my laptop. So I used Elive-Compiz 1.9.40 without the cube/rotation zoom effect (i can't remember which one caused the visual problem with Ecomorph) on my laptop till the regular unstable 1.9.48 was released and then I installed Ecomorph on it to get the Elive-Compiz look and feel. When I installed an Elive-Compiz version after 1.9.40 it was always crashing and asking for F1 or F2 or even worst case of all ctrl+alt+backspace. The regular unstable versions of Elive were always stable just didn't allow you to install Ecomorph without wanting you to uninstall the entire Elive system. But that problem was fixed by the time I installed 1.9.48.

I have not had a problem with Elive since and did not even upgrade to unstable version 1.9.60 till a couple of weeks before Elive 2.0 came out.

If you want to share drives with Windows its is safer to partition your drive as follows
WindowsOS-Drive /ntfs
Linux /-drive (which ever system T says you should use or Ext3/Ext4/rieser)
Linux /home (which ever system T says you should use or Ext3/Ext4/rieser)
Shared Drive /ntfs

then store all the files you want to access in both Windows and Linux on the Shared Drive.

As for Ext2 it is faster than FAT32 and allows you to store larger files than the 4gig of FAT32 but it is still slower so not as good as Ext3, Ext4, or rieser. People who dual boot usually only keep Ext2 because they want to access files in Linux from windows and the software drivers that allow this in Windows only work with Ext2. Ext4 is much better and stable than Ext2 and most new Linux releases will push you to use Ext4 by default.

As far as puppy linux goes, it is based on XFCE and Gnome. XFCE is not as polished as Enlightenment and Gnome will eventually become bulky as you install more software. Elive is based on Enlightenment which is naturally lightweight and has been designed to look polished and be light. As a Linux newbie you probably won't realise the advantages of Enlightenment over XFCE,Gnome or KDE but the longer you use Linux the more you'll prefer Enlightenment. Even the other main Enlightenment base Linux that uses Ubuntu as its base is moving to the way Elive is done using Debian as the base.

Anyway, I guess if your hardware is not working on Elive then you have no choice.

I did dl your file and made an usb to boot but typically the old compaq refuse to let me boot it.

Surprise, it does let me boot a 4GB with Topaz on it but not the older unstable. Used same program in windows to make it with. So all should be same except other smaller usb. I guess me have to make a DVD to boot then.

install Deamon Tools in windows and try mounting the iso to make sure it has no errors. Did you install zeitgeist from usb? To be honest I have never installed from usb always CD/dvd or the new iso based installer.
Re: 1.9.. Zeitgeist doesn't save keybd for Sweden or Norway

The the new iso based installer. Wow how does that work. Sounds intesting indeed.

Do you remember how I can read about it. I try to do a google. is it named that way?

elive iso installer maybe? Would be cool to test. I have struggled now for a long time to get the usb going and it fails.

Are there no easy way to tell grub to mount the usb and load the os from the usb?
Re: 1.9.. Zeitgeist doesn't save keybd for Sweden or Norway

No google did not find it.

Do you mean unetboot in special prepared to only take topaz 2.0 file?

"Booting Elive from USB - Where Debian meets Enlightenment
- [ Översätt den här sidan ]
Download the special Elive version of unetbootin and install it in a windows machine, you should be able to use a specific ISO file for it or it will ..."
www.elivecd.org/Help/Howto/boot-elive-from-usb

user eoss tried to get an answer some time ago. A year maybe.

[forum.elivecd.org]

He wrote this

"Which is the kernel cheatcode to boot elive from iso?
I haven't install it first and I don't want to install it first, I want only to boot it from iso file on my win partition using grub4dos, so I need to know how to load iso in kernel line.
Thanks."

That is what I want to know too. Would be practical to not have to make a DVD or an USB but to boot it as is.

I can to that with ubuntu so would be nice.

Maybe the following is a way to do it.

how to boot an usb from the hdd grub.

But if that allow me to install on the same hdd I am not sure of. Sounds kind of unlikely doesn't it?

But cool anyway to be able to at least test it without burning an dvd. I only have two left now. Yes they cost at most two dollars. Not much.

Thanks indeed for sending me the link to how to dl the file. Hope it is stable.

Hahah, telling the grub to boot from usb actually did work indeed.
It is a live system that is a hybrid sort of. Half of it is placed on the hdd and rest on the usb.

I copied the vmlinuz and the initrd to the same place as the original where placed in boot.

that way they could be reached through the boot grub codes. That allowed grub to fetch the rest it needed from the usb.

Have no idea why that works but it was easy when one know how to.

menu.lst something like this

title elive
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.30.9-elive-686 boot=eli vga=788 resolution
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.30.9-elive-686

Not sure if that is the optimal way to do it but it did work first time me tried.
I report back here if I get problem again.

I maybe even can do full install that way. this text seems to say that.

link to that text

"When you want to reinstall future versions of Elive on this computer, instead of extracting again to the hard disk, you need to copy to the /boot folder of your installed system, the vmlinuz and initrd files from the new ISO that you want to use, they are found under the boot directory of the ISO contents if you open it, then just edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst of your installed system and add a new entry similar to your default one. For this entry you need to put the address of these new kernel and initrd files, remember to set a different title for this entry. Now, just copy the rest of the contents of the ISO to a fat32 partition of a USB stick, boot your computer again and put the parameter boot=elive. You can even copy the contents of the ISO to a partition of your hard disk instead of a usb stick! The Elive possibilites are unlimited emosmile

its nothing that complicated that you need to google and read up on. If you have a version of Elive installed, you just right-click > Administration > Upgrade Elive (install a new version of Elive)
It will then ask you to tell it where the downloaded ISO is and when you reboot it boots straight into the liveCD mode from the ISO file.
Re: 1.9.. Zeitgeist doesn't save keybd for Sweden or Norway
March 26, 2010 01:22AM
Yes I had read that one and not fully grasped it and feel unsure now too.

Upgrade to 2.0 but in live version then. But that works only if I have a booted version already.
So I still need to have the usb in the slot or usbjack.

Aah so it does a kind of frugal install so after reboot it doesn't need the usb in the slot.

but then it must rewrite the menu.lst too or put a new entry above the old one?

Well I have nothing to loose on that machine then. I test it and tell the result.

which place is best for the iso to be placed? in boot or at root or where?

I don't think it matters where you put it, as long as you tell the installer where the iso is. I upgraded to 1.9.60 from the user /home or desktop if I remember correctly. You will be asked for your root password when you open the installer if you are not logged in as the root user
Re: 1.9.. Zeitgeist doesn't save keybd for Sweden or Norway

I kept it on an usb and that worked too.

But I am unsure of if I had your file or the 1.9.61 zeitgeist.
At one moment it said it was 61 and not 60. Well I can always do it again I guess.

Thanks indeed for caring about me.
