SUN Virtualbox Installation
March 24, 2010 11:19PM
Hi to everyone,
I have tryed to install virtualbox ose v3.1.4 on elive topaz installed version. No way to get out from there. Does anyone tryed this before?
The problem is simple, during installation is not possible to re-compile the kernel as virtual box needs to do. Result: virtualbox is installed but once yo try to run a virtual machine (newly created or old one is the same) the system says that cannot proceed.
Is anybody have a solution for this?
Thanks in advance to all for interesting to a newbie. I'll be very grateful for any incoming suggestion.
rgds.

how did you install virtualbox? Did it update the linux kernel? Do you have the Elive-Linux headers and source files installed?

Also from

[forums.virtualbox.org]

you may need to reboot after installing before it can build. I had VB on an older unstable version of elive and it worked with no problems.

Have you installed the build-essential package, and it's dependencies? If your system doesn't have the kernel headers, the C compiler, and various other necessities, you are unable to build much of anything.

You will have to enable some repositories, in addition to the defaults that are enabled with a fresh install. Google can help you to decide which repositories you WANT installed - I suggest the Debian-testing repos.

If you have installed the dependencies as mentioned by Runaway1956 you can run /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup at any time to build the kernel modules.

Thanks to all for the time spent for me, after on or two rope walking let me give you some info's: the installation is made in classic mode, I mean download package from sun, run the install in administrator mode. I've tried also to install the build-essential package as suggested by Runaway1956 but probably I'm selecting something wrong: the message is "impossible to lock the download dir" in synaptic package manager. Probably the right package and dependencies are not correctly selected. Thanks again to everybody for the help. If extra info are needed I'll try to give all the messages given by the system or follow a step-by-step procedure that you will suggest. As you probably understood I'm a newbie on debian, I was using ubuntu since 1 month ago but elive seems to me a more interesting (and reliable) operating system and environment so I decided to move to.
Help me please!

more news:
tried the suggestion of Squirrel and in the log the message is:
Makefile:152: *** Error: unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel. Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again. Stop.

any idea?

Hi erremme,

Virtual Box is an external program and not a part of the debian repositories and consequently you have to build a clear area before installing it. Install the kernel headers and the kernel sources at first. Check your kernel image (installed version). If you do not know how to do it look with the search function in synaptic "kernel-image" . Find out what is marked as installed. Than look for the same kernel-sources and kernel-headers in synaptic and install it. The error message you have got is that the the kernel sources cannot be found. The GNU c-compiler should also be installed. You can check this also in synaptic and install. I recommend to look around in google for further information. If you have fulfilled the dependencies you can run again /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup.

I do not have Virtual Box installed on my present elive 1.9.60 because I do not need it. But have it installed before on several systems as Ubuntu 9.10, Simply Mepis 8.0, Debian Lenny, and elive 1.9.51. It is possible.

Hi Squirrel,
bad news at this time. I know I'm a newbie for debian (a little dumb too I guess) but I had no way out from there. I tried to find out which kerner source to install. Either with googled info nor reading the entire list on synaptic manager I have not understood the sources to install. I've installed the kernel-package (utility for building linux kernel) but doesn't work and I do not think is the right choice.
On synaptic there is no kernel-sources neither headers too or (better) I can't find them. Can you give me an extra helping hand in order to tune my mind on what to search? I hope not become boring with my questions, I'm in this matter and I have to find an way out, so please forgive me for the time you'll spend for me.
Thank you very much.

Hi squirrel,
first of all: thank a lot for your patience.
after some investigations I have "probably" get more closer to the solutions (I can see the light after the tunnel?) and let me list you the installed kernel I found:

linux-image-2.6.24.7-elive-686
linux-image-2.6.25.16-elive-686
linux-image-2.6.30.9-elive-686

and now the headers and sources

linux-headers-2.6.24.7-elive-686
linux-headers-2.6.25.16-elive-686
linux-headers-2.6.30.9-elive-686

linux-source-2.6.30.9-elive-686
linux-source-2.6.30.9-elive-core2-highmem-686
linux-source-2.6.30.9-elive-highmem-686

no tracks of linux-source-2.6.24.7 nor 2.6.25.16

are these sorces correct to install ?
I prefer to ask you before trying to compile a kernel that will crash all te system.

Can you give me any suggestion?
thank you very much again.

Hi erremme,

ok, you have found the kernel-sources. Only one of them is to install. The source of the kernel you are using and the kernel headers. Furthermore the build-essential package. That is enough. Yesterday I have installed VirtualBox on my 1.9.60. It is working. Which kernel you are using? Look in Synaptic with the search function and type kernel or kernel-image. The kernel which is marked as installed is the kernel you are using. For this kernel you need the sources and the header files to install. Hereafter run /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup again.

Hi erremme,

reading again your posting that you have installed three kernel images. You are probably working with the last of them 2.6.30.9-elive-686. As I understand right the sources and the header files are installed for this kernel. Have you installed the build-essential package? If not install it and run /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. Do not compile a new kernel. This is not necessary for VirtualBox. The /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup will build the kernel driver for the running kernel.

Greetings

Squirrel

Hi Squirrel,
great job, as you say the installed kernel are many. I'll install only the last version you suggest and the headers for that source. The build-essential package is already installed so I'll proceed with running /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup after installation of surces and headers. I'll keep you reported for results.
At this moment I just can thank you very much for all the suggestions you gave about this matter.
May I tell you're great?

Hi Squirrel,

great job, great great great job! everything works fine. I do not know how to thank you for the BIG HELP you gave me! First of all your suggestions were absolutely and definitely right and complete. Without your help I still going around the hell finding a way out for this matter! I have to pay a beer for you, may be we will meet in this world or in another, so I will pay my dues. Last but not least I've learned something new concerning this OS. I'm not an expert of ubuntu but my knowledge on that OS is stronger than debian. I went into debian thanks to elive that I found a great environment, pleasant and confortable and from now more flexible than ever. Amazing!
So... thank you very much for the time you spent for me.
THANK YOU.

Sincerly
