USB disk locked under Thunar
May 08, 2010 04:42AM
Hi guys,
I'm trying to copy some files on a USB disk (windows formatted) but can't seem to do it. I can although copy from that USB disk to the regular hard drive but not the other way around. So I opened a root session which worked, opened all the rights (reading and writting) for that USB drive but still, can't copy anything on it.
Any idea how to do it ?

Thanks for your help.

Sebastien.

Hi!

That sounds like the Filesystem on that USB-Device is damaged.
Try to check it by using "fsck" as root.

In Case it's damaged best thing you can do: Formatting.

Have Fun.

If the usb stick is formatted for Windows, then the file system will be in ntfs (new technology file system). This is totally incompatible with Linux. However, sometimes when you "safely remove" from a windows machine, it doesn't always stop all the services properly (gee go figure). No worries, if this is the case, then all you need to do is simply hookup to another windows machine, and "safely remove" again. If this still does not resolve the issue, you may have to "eject" then "safely remove" or a separate combination of the two. If the problem persists, the yes, Alex would be right in that you would have to re-format the stick.

Hope this helps.
