Sleep/wake authentication; what is it and what's its password?

On an Intel Core2 T5500, I am running i686 pae and find that when it recovers from sleep I get an authentication screen. It will run a wait spinner until I sig9 X from a console when provided a user password.

Looks like I'm not dealing with xscreensaver but with...Screen Module's screen lock settings; it's set to lock, but user passwd doesn't particularly unlock it, rather bring up a 'spinner' and perhaps a little 'authenticating' note that's more temporary.
