How can I stop elive from syncing the RTC on halt??? (no replies)

I'm a multi-boot user who dislikes having certain tasks automated. I keep my RTC (the bios clock) set to local time. And I like to manage it manually from the bios utility.

I know that on boot any Linux will take it's initial time setting from the RTC, Then depending on NTP settings it might correct it's system clock from some server. That much is fine with me. But...

Somehow I managed to make sure Elive uses & expects local time rather than UTC. I know I edited /etc/timezone to say, "America/New_York" & that I did a:

cp /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/New_York /etc/localtime

Whatever else I did I can't quite remember. But the file: /etc/default/rcS does say: "UTC=no" But what I want to do is to prevent the system time from being written back to the RTC on system shutdown.

With Sabayon Linux there was a file with similar functionality to /etc/default/rcS called: /etc/conf.d/hwclock. Where in addition to setting 'clock="local"' to stop it from using UTC, there was also a setting 'clock_systohc="NO"' which stopped it from setting the Hardware Clock to the current System Time during shutdown.

With PCLinuxOS the file for this stuff is /etc/sysconfig/clock But it turned out that to stop PCLinuxOS from syncing the RTC I needed to comment out a line in /etc/init.d/halt which now says:

# [ -x /sbin/hwclock ] && action "Syncing hardware clock to system time" /sbin/hwclock $CLOCKFLAGS

I looked at /etc/init.d/halt in elive but didn't see anything like that line in it.

Could someone tell me how I can stop elive from writing to the hardware clock (RTC) at any time, excepting only that I should manually run "hwclock --systohc"??

Just, just listen.

3 suggestions:

- New features, re-done default UI. Most of the user will leave it the same for years. Tweak it up for effictivity and add some eye-candies

- Don't hide the price for the stable release. Throw it up like this: "Everyone look, if you want go stable and if you want 2 year 24/7 web support, then try us! We're donationware organization and you need us so much you'd pay 5$ for this!"

- You and bill gates&others would be a nice couple. Hey let's earn some billions on heavy working people today and then have a party! Just so ***** stop behaving like this, dude!

- noone knows about elive

- the community is a bunch of... there's not a word for this in english

- the forums are dead

- the irc is full of haters/closed community(srsly)

- the site is just outdated

- you miss good artists, a solution would be converting some ya'al'good themes to E17

and again, suggestions:

- merge with openGEU(ya rly)

- give it look and feel

- simplify E17

- super EXTREME simplification of tweaking the system to your own look; just create a wizard and make it really really REALLY simple

- compare yourself to other systems, just show off what elive gives!

- listen to the community

- Reorganize your work on ELive. I always liked the idea to split the work into parts, and don't go to the next part until it's finished, and do it again(beta), then again(RC) and then again(finals) and then again(bugfixes), like this:
1. Optimize startup, copy ideas from: Google Chrome OS, Windows 7, Ubuntu
2. Optimize anything that's slow
3. Work on GUI
4. Wizards & other stuff for the GUI
5. Re-work GUI
6. Default system look optimalization
7. Try to integrate WINE as flawlessly as possible
8. A whole BUNCH of apps for the stable release
9. Loop; work on suggestions
10. Loop; debug suggestions

- SO ******* update the repos! ;)

- integrate synaptic into system deeper

- hide the word linux from everywhere; for the user it's a bad word; you can put E instead of that

- integrate a OOBE/switch from windows mode: same keyboard shortcuts, look&feel as close as possible, whilst not breaking the E17 feel

- create multimedia edition

complaints, at last:

- iceweasel is just bad, remove and die :)

- bug report system doesn't seem to work; bugs just don't die (IMHO)

Conclusion:

If someone tl;dr I'll go and glue his eyes. This is serious thread!

Hi, all.

I'm a 10th grade student that recently discovered the sheer amazing-ness of eLive.
I have a eeepc 701, and until now nothing has made it run quite as well as eLive. :boogie:

So far I've been using development versions to see how well eLive works.:enlightenment:
In about two weeks time I will be displaying a website/server combo at a state-wide technology fair/competition.
I would really like to have my eeepc run the administration, and the best choice for an OS would have to be the new eLive 2.0.
Unfortunately, I am absolutely, completely broke. My last ten dollars went into buying a necessary part for my webserver.:dish:

I have read about getting licenses for eLive by writing reviews, and I would like to contribute in any way I can....:work:

OK: my question.
In the last month or two, I entered a science fair with a project that compares the attributes of Windows operating systems to Linux (Ubuntu and eLive). eLive and Ubuntu completely outran Windows in the tests.
Would I be able to submit this comparison of OSs in return for eLive 2.0?
If so, who do I give it to or where do I upload it?

I would be absolutely thrilled to be able to show off eLive at this competition.

Paid for the Elive distro and love it but the computer I had it on died and now it won't let me install on the new computer and trying to contact someone at Elive is impossible as the email addresses they provide will not work, I need some help my email address is robertbirish@gmail .com

Laptop Volume keys~ (2 replies)

Hi,

I just got elive 2.0 love it. The only one bug is that... my laptops keys for volume control does not work! it usually is fn-pg up for volume increase, fn-pg dn for decrease, and fn-home for mute and unmute. I tried adding these in settings>keybindings but when i do for some reason what should be volume up is volume down, what should be volume down is mute, and it never works for volume up...

WHat do i do?

ntpdate not running + have to set time each boot (Solved) (2 replies)

At each boot I have to reset the time to my local time manually, even though the timezone is set to Africa/Cairo. When I use the "set time & date dialog" It shows that Africa/Cairo is selected, but I get the message that ntpdate is not installed. Actually it is.

If I run it manually I get the error :
10 Mar 06:34:15 ntpdate[5075]: no servers can be used, exciting

any help appreciated.

hola gente,soy nuevo aca en este foro,me llamo carlos,30 años y soy de Argentina

el problema mio es que grabe la imagen .ISO en un cd , carga todo ok,pero cuando llega a la ultima parte antes de que aparezca el escritorio me marca error (EE) no devices detected omfg y me devuelve a la parte de configurar starx y todo eso

mi placa es una ATI HD 4350 y lo demas de mi pc es:
procesador 2.40 Ghz - 3 GB ram - AMD 64x2

Hi.

Anybody know how to enable transparency for rainlendar2-calendar (with or without ecomorph)?

When ecomorph is enabled the transparency option in the rainlendar menu is enabled, but it has no effect. When I add rainlendar to the windows which should be displayed transparent - same thing: nothing happens.

I know it's just an eye-candy thing. Nevertheless I love rainlendar but hate when it spoils my desktop background. Any hints are welcome.

Dear Thanatermesis,

first of all, many thanks for this amazing distro. It is a really great
work. I have elive installed and update it periodically. Presently it
is 1.9.60. Due to my good experience with elive I plan to install it on
all my computers in my small network at home and to use it as my base
system. I have download 2.0 Topaz and start an update, but stopped it
on the question of payment. I think it is okay to pay for the stable
version Topaz because open source software means not automatically
free of charge. But when the installer ask me for payment the first time
and I agree and go on what about the second and the following
installations? Do I have to pay for each installation like Microsoft
style?

I like what I see on the live CD, but wondered about some applications that would make an install better than what I would otherwise get with Debian.

Are there plans to have some updated applications exclusive to Elive? I really like the way things are shaping up for the next Ubuntu, primarily OpenShot, which just had an update today. Perhaps doing such things would mess up various dependencies and such. If that's the case I'd completely understand and move on.

On the other hand, being able to dpkg most anything... again, as long as the dependencies are in stable Debian... is a real plus. The liveCD flies with Google Chrome installed. Will there be any extra application CDs produced, as in days of yore?

I just completed the installation of v2.0 on my laptop (v1.0 wouldn't run on it) and things went perfectly. I didn't have any issues at all.

Being a Gnome guy for about 3 years, I'll have a bit of a learning curve with the E17 environment but that's OK....I'm enjoying it.

I work with Elive since last year. My wifi card intel wifi link 5100 worked on Elive 1.9.*. I upgrade my Elive but since upgrade to Elive2.0, I don't have wifi.

Why? And How repare this?

Well done Samuel and your team! Elive Topaz works flawless on my AAO.
Installed it via an external DVD-Drive, so no USB-key needed! ;)
Took a while though, but I guess that's because of the driverspeed of this driver...
Looks great in night-theme, couldn't find EL-Panel but that's found under e17 preferences.

I had to download a few times to get a good copy of the iso, but once I got it the install went well and is working perfectly. Thanks a lot I have been able to resurrect this perfectly good laptop, which was dying under windows.

I have installed elive 2.0 about 10 times since yesterday using different file system offered by the distro. At boot I get the list of OS in my box in this case Debian Squeeze and Elive. When I chose Elive I get the following error:

root (hd0,1)
Filesytem type unknown, partition type 0x7
Error 17: Cannot mount the selected partition

My machine has two SATA hard drives:
500G Debian Squeeze
250G Elive Topaze

I can still boot into Debian via Elive Grub list but Elive is a no no.

Is there a known issue with Elive on SATA?

I am trying to prepare a bootable USB thumb drive.
I am in the livecd mode (written .iso file on CD-R and booted from it). I have copied all the contents of the iso file on the usb partition. Now when I try to install grub on the drive to make it bootable (as documented at [www.elivecd.org] ) I get the following error:

Do I need to install elive on the hard disk first and then try to make a bootable ( that will be like the 'hen before the egg' situation :P )

Hi all,

I try to boot the elive 2.0 Live CD at a Sony Vaio. In the past I have had several problems booting debian or gentoo based distribution at this laptop.
The only one up to now is the actually the current Sidux distribution, which find the image on /dev/sr0. IMHO is this normally a usb device...However, which is the correct grup option at the grub start command, that elive search at /dev/sr0?

I saw in the live mode that Elive 2.0 uses Debian Lenny with Iceweasel 3.06. Now we have already Iceweasel 3.6. Thus this wonders me if it is possible to add debian squeeze sources.

Hi I bought the sistem and received a installer module on my email.
I installed it in my Eeepc worked fine, then I formated because I wanted to install it in VirtualBox to learn how to configure it right and try different stuff in a big screen.
I tried to install it in my desktop but it says that the installer module is not correct...
How does it work? is there a limitation with th licence and hwo many computers I can install it???

hello, i'm not in the know about the status of the free ati drivers and can't find any recent info. I expected cards like mine to be working by now but it didn't with elive 2.0. Can anyone tell me where can i find any news about the drivers or a solution to make my card work?? I hear fedora 12 makes these cards work well, so why don't they in the newest elive? thanks

Somehow.. someway I have lost the title bar on all windows. I am not sure how I've done this? In Ubuntu it was a result of emerald failing but in this Elive install, which is all of twenty minutes old, that cannot be the cause. So far I really like the quickness of this debian build (even if it did cost me $15), but without the ability to move/resize windows it will soon be a waste of money.
Could someone please give some help?

Hola a todos. He instalado elive 2.0 en una memoria usb para usarlo como un sistema portable y todo va de maravilla exepto que cuando apago el pc todas las configuraciones (red, fuentes, documentos creados, etc...) desaparecen al volver a reiniciarlo. El S.O. está instalado en /dev/sdb1 formateado en ext3 y he creado una partición para datos que la he montado en /dev/sdb2 también formateada en ext3 (aquí los datos no se borran). Alguien podría decirme la manera de salvar las nuevas configuraciones sin que desaparezcan.

Sure it looks awesome but what is the difference from me just installing E17 on my debian distro?

IIt has already pissed me off that I wasted a cd on something I can't install

I'd love to write articles saying how great it is and possible even donate if I wasn't forced too

instead it will be quite the opposite
