from the repo you pick the package in Synaptic, then click apply. to install one you downloaded that isn't specifically compiled for elive: set up a local repository and put it in there. point Synaptic to the local repository and install it. This isn't specific to any brand or model of laptop, it can occur on most of them. you need to go through the udev scripts and find the one for the display. it is setting the display gamma to about 65% that needs to be edited to be 90% or 100% to have it not dim the display beyond usability. Better to go multilib than pure 64. there are some oft used apps that are only 32 bit. to bad E17 doesn't work for me as well as E16 does, cause I'm doing a multilib build using clfs [ cross linux from scratch ] on 2 systems right now, E16 will be the UI on top of Xorg.
