hello I am trying the newer development release in live mode. Is there a boot parameter I could use to have it recognize a (legacy) nvidia graphics card and run the open-source nouveau/nvidia driver? I might want to give the hardware accelerated desktop a tryby she_died - [OLD] - Live mode

Hi Flemming, and welcome aboard! There are other ways to change the resolution. Check out Permanent Solutions on this wiki page. I used to type vga=ask at the GRUB screen additional parameters to see what screen rez are supported by the graphics card; it's mostly a matter of responding to onscreen prompts. Incidentally you may want to mention what graphics card you have, in your reply.by she_died - Configurations and Hardware Solutions
On freecode.com a search produced several hits. They get fancier as you progress down the list. Here Some of them have GPL license; others have Shareware, so choose wisely.by she_died - Software
Hi thanatermesis! Once in a while I still boot up the live CD of Topaz when I'm at a public wifi station (It's actually a partition on my laptop, so no disc required). But when I try to reload in synaptic, I get 404s instead. I recall there was a patch for installed 'Elive' but I am not sure it will work with this live CD version. What are the current US elive repos now? (oby she_died - [OLD] - Live mode
Thana, Good to hear from you. Please start a new forum topic re translation once you have it set up, like it was before maybe, so that any (registered) volunteers need only a click or two to access and get busy :-) she_diedby she_died - Announcements of Newest Features
There are some commands that let you see what's hogging the system. Open an extra terminal to view the status while working. In that extra terminal, type top and/or ps aux; top is better since it ranks by resource usage. Is there a lot of disk I/O (light could be flashing) and how much swap is being used (top shows this)? You didn't turn on all the eye-candy effects by any chance?by she_died - [OLD] - Installed Mode
The desktop I have has only 256M RAM; it can handle Elive. The nvidia card handles all the heavy lifting in graphics. If your graphics chip works well in live mode (onboard intels could handle 2d and maybe a fancy ecomorph cube); I'd say go for it. But if you*ube and flassh are important to you, that would push it a bit. Other distros, though tiny, aren't as good looking and would be inby she_died - [OLD] - Installed Mode
Gera, I used to do this; I still use the live version of topaz. So if anything breaks, the next reboot will bring me back to where I was. Depending on the app I am trying out, sooner or later, the fragile ecosystem will break if I continue to use squeeze. There is an old post somewhere here from Thana that advises against using squeeze. It's like voiding the warranty. If you are workinby she_died - Applications
My desktop has a USB wifi stick that will connect to open/shared wireless networks. But once I try to connect to the wifi that uses WEP, it will refuse to connect even if the signal is good (it is a half-supported rt2870 and warning messages appear about the driver still in staging). This is when I use network connector 0.3 rev 7 on Topaz. Since there are no open wifi where I live, I had to use aby she_died - [OLD] - Live mode
Gera, Go into Menu > Settings > Settings Panel > Input > Edge bindings. It allows you to set the edges (which are the 4 sides of your desktop) to do different things when the mouse reaches each edge, so it's not really the corners. Just now, I set my top edge to Initiate Expo. I shy away from taskbars since I find the pager sufficient with the ring-switcher, but you could eby she_died - [OLD] - Installed Mode

Elive is not dead. But it's not a big team working here, so don't expect too much. When they *do* release stuff, I for one feel that it is always worth the wait, and I get even more convinced each time that it's worth the price. Given the frequency of releases, you may not want to put it on the box that gets heavy or critical use, even though something like topaz is stable enough fby she_died - Off topic

Oh I've had that problem too, when I saved my older .e and its subfolders, X server would crap out and refuse to start. So I started with a fresh .e and added old themes one by one to see which ones were updated enough not to crash X+e17. But I am glad you were able to fix the problem you had.by she_died - Configurations and Hardware Solutions
Did you get good graphics in LiveCD mode? It makes a best guess to adapt to your card. I would only select the other older drivers in case something isn't working. Once you have selected a good one in live mode, you should pick the same in installed mode. I wouldn't put another driver in its place, by myself, not even from nvidia as that is a sure road to trouble for a n00b. Try a diby she_died - Configurations and Hardware Solutions
sorry for the late reply, but maybe by now you have discovered grub. Towards the end of installation, it will present a menu called the grub menu, and it should list all detected OS'es on your computer. This menu will appear everytime you boot the computer. You can choose it to default to either Windows or Elive after a wait period of a few seconds. The old form grub can even be edited, butby she_died - [OLD] - Live mode
Is it an .edj file? I used to place modules in my $HOME/.e/e/modules, and when I go to the menu to add or enable it, the new module would be listed.by she_died - Enlightenment
My guess is the original poster has a USB webcam and a USB mouse. See if the same 'freeze' happens on either a bluetooth or serial-type mouse. But if the webcam doesn't work in Elive, well, leave the mouse inby she_died - [OLD] - Installed Mode

Larrydc- Right, I misunderstood, sorry about that The same thing happens to me, and I gave up on that little tool. This is the problem: I have an .Xdefaults file and the font is specified in there. If I go 'pick a font style' the tool BLANKS OUT my default font and fails to insert the chosen font, but it leaves the other stuff intact such as URxvt.font:xft::pixelsize=16. I have a Thinkpad X41 which flips into a tablet. I am looking for a GUI keyboard input panel so that I can use the stylus to type when I have the physical keyboard 'tucked away'. The Fedora F14 spin (called Design) detects the stylus, ready for GIMP and sticky pads. All I need now is a graphical keyboard app and I can surf the web. rasta If you have not wiped out the ISO from the stick, take a look at this little tool that will search for ISO's on your hard drive and USB and list them menu-style; it's called gujin. I use it to boot different ISO's, but since my old hardware will not boot from USB at all, I put the Elive ISO in a standalone partition (same thing with archlinux live, and so on).
