Figured it out, motherboard was sick! I installed the hard drive into another machine, and all is well. Thanks for your quick response!by wmichaelb - Configurations and Hardware Solutions
Alex: thanks for your kind reply! Alt-F1 does put the system into verbose mode, and two things come up: 1.) There are a number of references to "file system NOT clean". 2.) The line that the boot halts at is 38.7920009, and has to do with networking and tracing. Given (1.) above, should I try running fsck from the live CD? or ?? Thanks again.by wmichaelb - Configurations and Hardware Solutions
Suddenly, my Topaz installation won't finish booting. Is there a verbose boot mode that I can invoke to try and trouble shoot the installation? It gets to the splash screen, then about 3/4 of the way through "starting services". The last line in the background that I can read says something about "cupsd - ok", and then it hangs; but I can't read anything else. Thereby wmichaelb - Configurations and Hardware Solutions
Agust: I clearly see the check box that you mention in the picture above. I could not find that check box in the same dialog box in my Topaz install (picture below if it uploads). After fiddling about, the check box suddenly appeared, and I managed to change the fonts and font sizes in the dialog boxes for the settings panel. But none of this has any effect on the font size for the dialog boxby wmichaelb - Software
Thanks for your patience! I left-click on the desktop, select settings/settings bar, and that dialog box opens. I click on Looks ( the leftmost icon ) and then fonts, and another dialog box opens. I select "Menu Item", "Serif" font, and size "big". I click on Apply, close the window, right-click on the desktop to see the menu...and nothing has changed. Is there a speby wmichaelb - Software
Thank you, sir; I left-click on the desktop, click on settings, and then theme, and I get a dialog box that lets me select a font and size. But when I do, nothing changes in my initial dialog box: not the font nor the size. Where is the entry for "change font gtk"? Thanks again!by wmichaelb - Software
verdegal: I have the same question, but would like to keep the default theme. When I click on menu/preferences, I find nothing labeled "options panel". Has this been changed to something else in Release 2? I also tried changing the font in Settings/Fonts, but nothing changes in the desktop dialog boxes. I was able to change the Font in Iceweasel in Edit/Preferences, but that obviously dby wmichaelb - Software

Alex: thank you! Interestingly, that program had already been installed, but since it runs only as root in a terminal and isn't noted in the Applications menu, I had no idea it was there. Is there any documentation out there about this or other software that is similarly hidden, perhaps on the Debian site? Thanks again!by wmichaelb - Applications
Gnome has the Sysinfo application. Is there an equivalent package on Elive? I've searched through Synaptic, but can't find one. I've installed Elive on a leftover machine, and I'd like to know what's in there...~(8^})=....by wmichaelb - Applications
That's a big help, thanks; I figured it was something basic. Next - how can I find and add icons for programs that have no icons listed in the applications list I find after right-clicking on the bar? Thanks again!by wmichaelb - [OLD] - Installed Mode
Hi, I installed Open Office, and now have two invisible icons on the bar. How do I delete them? Replace them with a real Ooo visible icon? For that matter, how does one "iconize" a program that has been downloaded, but has no icon available to add to the bar? Thanks in advance!by wmichaelb - [OLD] - Installed Mode
Alex: I did indeed find Net Connect, and attempt to initiate a connection. The effort timed out with no connection. I also tried using the computer networking icon in Gem 1.0; it would initiate on boot, but not connect. If I tried turning it off and reconnecting, it would time out without eth0 reinitializing. I'm increasingly motivated to try a new NIC card, but almost all those atby wmichaelb - Configurations and Hardware Solutions
Alex: thanks for responding! The version that I'm running from the HD on that machine is the latest Gem 1.0, downloaded three days ago. I've been unable to figure out how to get system information on that version of Elive, whatever it might be. I then downloaded 1.9.57 (unstable) yesterday, and tried that as a live CD. It looks much different, with a lot of changes to the initialby wmichaelb - Configurations and Hardware Solutions
Hi, I just installed Elive, and in general, I'm impressed. But neither Iceweasel nor the package manager have internet access. The network configuration panel says that eth0 is active, but it's not acquiring an IP address via DHCP from my router. I have both an Intellinet PCI NIC card, and the onboard ethernet port, if that means anything; but neither give access, other than what is shby wmichaelb - Configurations and Hardware Solutions
